Week 6- Synchronous Assignment 1. What was the example I gave for extinction regarding one of my cases? That involved a very dangerous behavior. In the past you had a client that ran into the street, because he wanted to get hit by a car and he was an inch away from that happening. 2. What did I say about medical causes? That the first thing we do is we rule out medical causes for behavior and to have your clients evaluated by a doctor and rule those things out. Because if you don't rule out those medical causes then it may have been attention seeking and any new behavior that arises needs to rule out medical causes. 3. What was the example I provided about school settings and individuals who need to be on the same page. Who typically comes over and messes things up? That in a school setting, if there's an aide, classroom assistant, or another individual involved, there's often that one person who unintentionally disrupts your efforts because they lack understanding. They may suggest leniency or offer additional rewards, inadvertently undermining the established procedure. This inadvertently strengthens the undesired behavior on a different level. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure everyone is aligned when implementing extinction. If Mom is employing extinction but Dad enters the scene and reinforces the behavior, it becomes problematic. It's essential for everyone to be on the same page, especially when there's an escalation in the intensity of the responses. It's important not to panic or overreact in such situations.
