8-1 Discussion Employee Mental Health
We're in the final week of classes right now. At first, I didn't think much of this course, but as we progressed through it, I came to appreciate it more and more. It was a pleasure to engage in conversation with everyone there, as I got to learn new perspectives and see how people reacted to the work I presented. I hope that everything you set your mind to accomplish in the future is very successful for you.
Employers may do a lot to improve their employees' mental health. Training for those in authoritative roles is essential, in my opinion, as it can help them create a more constructive atmosphere. Administrators in the education field may help by educating themselves on how to spot the symptoms of stress and mental health issues in their employees. The importance of teaching supervisors
and managers the importance of work-life balance cannot be overstated (American Psychological Association, 2022).
Managers frequently interrupt workers' "time-off" by phoning them at inconvenient times or keeping them late at the office. As a result, I had to quit a career I'd come to appreciate and found rewarding. Even though I looked forward to coming to work every day, the owner had a habit of calling or texting me between 3 and 4 a.m., despite the fact that he knew I had to get up to send my kids to school before I could go to the office. This had a major influence in leading to my exhaustion and subsequent mental breakdown.
The absence of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace is associated with the stress
that arises from the underrepresentation of individuals from diverse backgrounds. This stress, in turn, can have detrimental effects on their mental well-being. Microaggressions and unconscious bias are among the numerous types of stress that individuals may experience throughout their life. It is imperative that all employees receive equitable treatment and have access to sufficient mental health care. Managers and employers bear the obligation of establishing an environment that fosters these conditions. "In light of the impact on employees and communities, it is imperative for employers to regard accessible and inclusive mental health as both a moral duty and a new strategic priority" (Staglin, 2019).
The dangers of groupthink and conformity in the workplace can be mitigated by creating a setting in which workers feel safe voicing their opinions and having civil conversations with those who disagree. To ensure that everyone's ideas and perspectives are based on the same principles, it could be
helpful to implement predetermined measurements or criteria. In my opinion, allowing anonymous feedback is a very effective way to reduce the effects of groupthink and conformity (Cherry, 2022). One benefit is that it gives those who are naturally shy a chance to speak their minds.
Everyone has a part to play in developing and maintaining a healthy culture at work. As was previously noted, management at all levels (owners, managers, etc.) has an obligation to provide their employees with mandatory training. Everyone in the company is responsible in some way for making sure the workplace is a positive and productive place for everyone involved.
Those who engage in prosocial behavior do so because they genuinely care about the well-being of others rather than for any personal gain (Myers & Twenge, 2022, p. 288). It is impossible to overstate
the relevance of strong core principles in creating a pleasant workplace. There are many distinguishing features of fundamental beliefs. For starters, they're good for you on a deep, individual level. Second, they are held in high esteem from a moral perspective regardless of any benefits that may accrue. Thirdly, they are not boastful but rather encouraging and admired by others around them. As a fourth point, they are countered by an equally distinct negative analog. Finally, they are proven in a measurable, characteristic way. Sixthly, you can tell them apart from other guiding principles. Seventh, there are those people who are the very best examples of them. Finally, some children exhibit them to an extreme degree. Regardless of one's upbringing or location, it is possible to teach oneself and others valuable traits throughout the course of a lifetime. I agree that these are characteristics, but I also see in them the embodiment of core values that could help create a more supportive setting for work.
It makes more sense to approach self-care, career connections, and ethics through the lens of employee mental health. Because it encourages introspection and the acquisition of new abilities, self-
care is crucial for the psychological health of workers. Relationships with other professionals are crucial because they provide light on the motivations behind people's actions and show us how to approach them effectively. The principles and ethics that have been created and to which we all adhere have a direct bearing on the emotional health of the workforce. Given the wide range of workplace conditions that may have an effect on an individual's mental health, it is crucial that the organization and we devote
appropriate resources to developing policies that protect the mental health of all employees.
