Current Approach to Solving Problems My strategies for finding solutions to problems include attentive listening and critical thinking. Being able to find quick solutions to issues is a daily responsibility for me in my role as
a registered nurse supervisor in the operating room. In this role, I am responsible for addressing and resolving issues brought up by patients, staff, and doctors.
Example of How Approach is Used
For instance, only last week I received a call from a doctor regarding a patient who required emergency surgery. As the supervisor, I needed to carefully listen to the surgeon to obtain the correct information about what the diagnosis of the patient was and how he wanted to proceed. All of my operating rooms were occupied at that point, but this procedure had to be performed promptly. I had to immediately get in touch with other surgeons to let them know that their non-emergent cases would be postponed so we could provide timely care to the incoming critical patient. I had to rearrange my staff to ensure that I had a surgical tech and RN on call who were familiar with the emergency case that was arriving. I had to communicate a lot of information that the surgeon had given me regarding the emergency case to many of my coworkers. I was able to complete this task and provide the necessary care for a critically ill patient in a timely and efficient manner.
Approach on Problem Solving
I learned how to employ active listening and critical thinking to assess issues and come up with the best answer attributable to my background in nursing. Not all issues require immediate reorganization or resolution. Listening to a person's concerns or issues without passing judgment enables me to apply my critical thinking skills to evaluate the situation and find a suitable solution for all parties involved.
