Why was the primary source created? o This article interviews Denis Hayes, the original organizer of Earth Day. Whose perspective(s) is presented in the source? o First person perspective of Denis Hayes, who was present during the first Earth day. And The interviewer’s perspective, who is receiving information about the event. Both Sources Analyze the primary sources relevant to your historical event for the presence of bias. For my source from the interview with Hayes on the TIME website, he speaks deeply about pollution, wildlife protection, oil spills, and food pesticides. I felt as though he was bias when it came to bettering the environment but his bias were good and positive. He wanted change and was in favor of making a change for the better by organizing this day. In my opinion this source is on the line of being pro-Earth day bias and balanced. My second source by Barbara Ruben has a pro-Earth day bias as well. She does use some negative words when describing what she did not what the Earth to be like, for example she says, “Our goal is an environment of decency, quality and mutual respect for all other human creatures and for all other living creatures. An environment without ugliness, without ghettos, without discrimination, without hunger, without poverty, without war.” Compare how your historical event is represented in your primary sources. 2
