3 pts
Week #4
Due Date: Monday by 11:59 EST
Learning Objectives
With the help of this week’s tasks, you should be able to identify commonalities in the diaspora but also unique developments based on African descendants’ circumstances.
This is aligned with course level objective #3 & #4 which state that:
At the end of this course you should be able to…
compare and contrast regional circumstances, and the responses people made during and after the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
examine and respond to the perspectives and actions African descendants have used when constructing new identities and rebuilding their lives. Assignment (In Brief)
Answer the questions below to review this week’s readings, and tasks related to the transformation of identity. Write your answers in a Microsoft word document, then label and save your document where you can find it later.
Submit your work on the weekly journal page Directions (Detailed)
Step 1.
Please answer each of the following questions in an organized, clear, and detailed way.
Begin by copying and pasting these questions into a word doc. Write your name at the top of the document. Then proceed to write your answers after each question.
1.
Many slaves all over the diaspora resisted the pressures and domination they had to face during the slave periods, but there were degrees in which they were willing to risk being caught or punished. Based on the readings and tasks you did this week, write a sentence or two on what the overall difference is between acts of resistance that were blatant, obvious or direct (referred to as “overt resistance”)
as opposed to the styles of slave resistance that were more subtle, hidden or coded or affirming their own cultural identity in a place 1
and time where they were forbidden to do so (referred to as “covert resistance”). Provide two examples
of overt resistance and two examples of covert resistance.
The difference between overt versus covert acts of resistance was in the level of visibility the act had. The Haitian revolution was an act of overt resistance as they openly fought the British, Spanish, and French armies for 12 years. There was a visible fight that was taking place by Africans for freedom. Slaves in Haiti who ran away in hopes to escape slavery. Covert acts are typically more indirect but still support acts of movement. An example of this is observed the breaking of tools to resist work or groups of slaves agreeing to intentionally slow down the amount of work completed.
2.
What did some of the Slave religions have in common
? How did the slave religions all over the diaspora differ from one another. Provide 2 examples of each.
Right at the cut off the pdf it mentions that religion addressed social economic relations of power. Whether it was having faith in God out of their obedience or through Voodoo where plans of a revolt came about, religion stood as a foundation and motivator to keep fighting and to escape slavery. A second comparison is how their belief often drew from systems that trace back into the Ancient African past. Remembering history, ancestors, customs etc. The first major difference is the origins of influence of slavery religions all over the world. For example, Christianity is found to influence often the inversely proportionate class so typically less influence lied with this practice. Practices like hoodoo and voodoo are found within analogues from West and West Central Africa and influenced many black Christians of the American south. A second difference is the manipulation of the belief that slave masters conducted with Christianity. As learned last week, slaves would go to church and be taught a false gospel that pointed them toward obedience toward their master while hoodoo/voodoo practices originated in Africa. 3.
What was your impression of the Haitain revolution? As part of your response include a few words on why those events were important to the diaspora story, and mention what the
Haitian
rebels were able to accomplish on their own that the revolts in other slave holding societies did not.
Early in the film, it mentions a particular slave master who led a “The foundation of relentless terror” which was considered by him to be “rational management. The system of his leadership was displayed in a clip as other slaves administering lashes upon other slaves and the torture that slaves were instructed to inflict on one another. What shocked me was the purpose being the lasting effect that it left behind in the minds of fellow slaves. Witnessing an act such as this would create a desire in them to be obedient, so they don’t receive the same punishment they themselves watched or was forced to do. Around 10:15, 2
