HIS 100 Project Template (1) HIS 100 Project Template
Use this template to address the steps in your Project Guidelines and Rubric. Replace the bracketed text with your responses. Ensure that you have considered your instructor’s feedback when revising your work. Proofread the entire document before submitting.
Part 1: Creating a Research Question
1.
Describe how your assumptions, beliefs, and values influenced your choice of topic.
Out of everything, my values influenced my choice of topic more than anything else. I personally
have plenty of friends within the LGBT community and without any doubt, all of them have had to face mistreatment in their lifetimes. I did not understand why people in their community are not allowed to live regular lives like the rest of us and instead must deal with these unfair circumstances. Before delving deeper into my research topic, I had baseline assumptions of what they had to go through, but I did not fully understand what it was exactly like for them. After more research and asking questions toward these people I know, I was able to come to a better understanding of the topic.
2.
Discuss the significance of your historical research question in relation to your current event.
My historical research question holds major significance in the fact that it delves into the other side of the issue. It tries to understand the perspective of the law enforcement involved with the
mistreatment of the LGBT community and why they allowed such behavior to strive. 3.
Explain how you used sources to finalize your research question.
To best understand every perspective involved, I took the information presented in my sources to draft my question. In every one of my sources, I realized that only one perspective was present in them. Even outside of these sources, I had quite a bit of trouble finding the perspective of the opposite side, the ones that were for the mistreatment of the LGBT community. I had found through many of the sources that I looked through that the only real reason for the law enforcement's complicity in the matter was due to their own hatred of the community and how they are “different.”
Part 2: Building Context to Address Questions
1.
Describe the context of your historical event that influenced your current event.
My current event is that of the current goings-on in Texas. The governor of Texas has ordered the investigation of parents whose kids have gone through transgender surgery and having them arrested because the governor believes it to be child abuse. Now members of the LGBT community must live under constant fear that something may happen to their parents because of their surgery.
2.
Describe a historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
The group that was directly involved in my historical topic would be the entirety of the LGBT community. They were the ones who had been mistreated and had to suffer constant belittlement and raids by the hands of regular townspeople and law enforcement.
3.
Explain the historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event.
The main motivation of the LGBT community was to ensure equal rights for themselves, as well as better treatment for the community.
Part 3: Examining How Bias Impacts Narrative
1.
Describe a narrative you identified while researching the history of your historical event.
The main narrative I was able to identify while reading my historical event would be the perspective of those who were in the LGBT community and had to suffer scrutiny. In doing so, I was able to read firsthand accounts of what happened during the many raids on LGBT 1
establishments.
2.
Articulate how biased perspectives presented in primary and secondary sources influence what is known or unknown about history.
Research found in primary and secondary sources can differ depending on the source itself. For example, a primary source would be more accurate in telling the information through a firsthand perspective. With it being a primary source, it is more credible than compared to a secondary source. While any source has a chance of being biased, a secondary source has more of a chance of having personal bias presented in it depending on the situation and what side of the situation the writer happened to be on.
3.
Identify the perspectives that you think are missing from your historical event’s narrative.
The one perspective that I am missing from my historical event would be the perspective of the law enforcement involved with the mistreatment of the LGBT community. There are plenty of articles that go over what happened the actual mistreatment but none from my understanding go over the other side’s story.
Part 4: Connecting the Past with the Present
1.
Explain how researching its historical roots helped improve your understanding of your current event.
While I did understand that members of the LGBT community dealt with mistreatment from time to time, I did not understand how serious the actions taken against them really were. Researching its historical roots has helped me understand and better sympathize with this community of people. It also taught me an especially important part of history that I otherwise would not have learned about.
2.
Articulate how questioning your assumptions, beliefs, and values may benefit you as an individual.
Any time you question your assumptions, beliefs, or values on any subject, you gain the opportunity to learn and grow more as a person. Had I not questioned myself, I would not have known any better about the lives of those who are in the LGBT community and what they must suffer through on an almost daily basis. Since I stepped out of my comfort zone and questioned all the above, I was able to better understand our society. I was able to become enlightened.
3.
Discuss how being a more historically informed citizen may help you understand contemporary issues.
Being a historically informed individual can help you better understand, deal with, and relate to any issues that may relate to you as a person. Due to my research about the LGBT community, I was able to understand their struggle better. I can empathize with this group of people more than I ever would have before. Now that I understand the issue, I can do my part in helping fight
the mistreatment of the community so that one day they are able to live their lives without any constant fear that they may be targeted just for the simple fact of being “different” to society's standards. 2
