Myths and Mythology: What to
Know
The word myth is used in popular culture to describe a tale or a story. Many of these myths are normally passed down from several generations but have little truth and a lot of exaggerations and lies. These are more common ideas and have similar themes. When using the term “it is a myth.” It had the meaning of telling a story with a little truth and some fiction. Many
myths are passed down and translated and transcribed from thousands of years before. When looking at the word myth from an academic perspective it is considered similar. A myth is a story that explains a culture's values and thoughts. Many myths are based on a cultural religious belief and are very traditional stories.
The most common theme of myths would be the creation stories. The most common mythological beliefs that spread across numerous cultures are the beliefs in a higher being, or supernatural being. These include gods, spirits, and unnatural events that are given human characteristic. Many of these creation myths are different across the cultures but have the same concept instilled into all of them. Another common myth is the flood myth. Many different cultures including The Ottawa Flood, the Islamic View of Noah, and even the Ancient Greek flood myth. Many of the flood myths are similar and expected to be placed around the same areas, this being an example as people seeing similar events but retelling them based on their own personal beliefs and culture.
Myths around the world are similar but come from diverse cultures for many reasons. Many cultures have witnessed the same event happening but tell it from their own religious perspective. This explains why many creation myths have the same concept just with different characters playing the rolls. These myths can also be similar because many try to teach similar morals and values, but again just use different situations to show this. Myths may also be similar because some cultures have the same higher powers and superior beings. With that said, many of
the myths can talk about the same person making them seem more similar than they are. Because
all cultures are unique in their own way there could be similarities in their beliefs and Gods but have different myths than a culture that is close to them.
Creation myths, which are also called cosmogonic myths, are theological and philosophical elaborations of the primal myth of creation. Creation myths are stories that are told
by cultures about the creation on the earth and humanity itself. The myth of creation is a narrative of the beginning of the world created by specific cultures to explain the birth of their community or beliefs. The myths of Creation are references to the process in which the world is developed around and given its final form within our own reality. These are also a basis for the making of human beings within our world along with the land, sea, and sky. Many of creation myths start with a god or higher being making the existence of the world around us. Because every culture is different, these myths help set a tone that allows the culture is made for to understand all the specific gestures, structure and actions specified to the culture. The several
types of creation myths include creation by a supreme being, creation through emergence, creation by world parents, and the creation from a cosmic egg.
