WK 3 Activity: Critical Analysis: Popular Culture: Food Delivery Service Food delivery services have become a part of popular culture again. The resurgence of food delivery services in popular culture can be attributed to the proliferation of various businesses, such as app-driven platforms like Uber Eats and health-conscious meal delivery platforms like Factor. These companies have significantly contributed to the rapid growth of the food delivery industry. Additionally, Forbes predicts that by 2030, this sector will generate annual revenues of $365 billion worldwide. What sparked the exponential demand for these services? Food delivery has become a cultural phenomenon, thanks to the widespread availability of various food delivery services such as UberEATS and Factor, which cater to preferences such as convenience and health-consciousness. Forbes predicts that the industry will generate $365 billion globally by 2030, prompting curiosity about the factors that have led to such a significant increase in demand. Media organizations continuously discuss the precision of specific narratives and subcategories within the educational genre. Different factions and individuals influence the credibility of investigations since it is shaped by the clash between their knowledge and belief systems. Although the term 'truth' is frequently linked to documentaries, it is primarily seen as a desirable attribute that producers and viewers strive for rather than an inherent feature of the content. There is always room for debate on whether that ideal has been realized (Ellis, 2021). Dinner delivery services may have originated in ancient Rome, according to historians. The importance of such services is reflected in the Romans having Thermopolis as their fast-food restaurant. Meals were kept warm at the counter in large clay pots, much like modern fast food. Thermopoliums were restaurants in ancient Rome where patrons could purchase food and wine
that had already been cooked. Because "polis" means "city" and "thermos" means "hot" in Greek, the term "polis thermos" is an exact translation (Cannizzaro, 2020). Thermopolium was an outdoor room with a stone counter and marble slabs laid in substantial clay jars (dolia) for storing food. Thermopolis was characterized by its simplistic design. As in modern fast-food shops, dining spaces might occasionally be found behind the counter. Vermont was the first state in the US to provide a milk delivery service in 1785. More and more people live in cities, meaning fewer individuals own their dairy cows. As a result, consumers began to support their local dairy farmers by purchasing milk from them (The Traditional History of the Milkman, 2021). Home delivery of food was a common practice in the early 20th century, with roots in the 1890s. The introduction of Superman in the first issue of Action Comics in June 1938 signaled the commencement of a prosperous era in superhero comic books. Superheroes like Superman emerged as the dominant personalities in the business just before the conclusion of World War II. During this period, Classics Illustrated released many comic book adaptations of renowned literary works, leading to an investigation into the graphic novel format (Greenberger, 2022). After WWII, supermarkets and housing developments largely contributed to the decline of neighborhood food businesses in the United States. In Europe, the change was less dramatic (Kovel, 2023). A Chinese restaurant in San Francisco is said to have been one of the first restaurants in the United States to introduce meal delivery services in the 1920s (U.S. Embassy Japan, 2016). The advent of online meal delivery has had noticeable and substantial effects on the transportation and logistics sector, significantly altering the last stage of food and supplies distribution. On the other hand, the growing food delivery model influences the characteristics and traits of the personnel responsible for carrying it out, especially those involved in the freelancing sector. Furthermore, it intensifies transportation congestion in
significant metropolitan areas. Despite the growing popularity of this new approach to providing and consuming food, evaluations of its long-term viability often consider social, environmental, and economic sustainability as separate concepts without adequately considering how they are interconnected, influence each other, and may lead to conflicts (Lord, 2023). Online shopping is a more time-consuming process as it requires being available when customers want to contact you about missing things. However, it provides a sense of security. In the 2000s, food delivery applications significantly rose in popularity. This trend grew as smartphone use became more widespread, resulting in their domination. Individuals working in workplaces can have food brought to their desks, while those who do not want to cook after work may easily order meals using their cell phones. Since the early 2000s, there has been a significant increase in innovative super-delivery applications. Some eating venues survived the epidemic by specializing in high-end delivery services. DoorDash achieved fame in 2018 by surpassing Uber Eats and becoming the second-largest food delivery service in the United States. DoorDash emerged as the preeminent meal delivery service in the United States in 2019, surpassing Grubhub after experiencing a period of decline. In November 2022, DoorDash began operating in more than seven thousand cities in Japan, the United States, Canada, and Australia. According to Brittain Ladd, a recognized supply chain and consumer goods expert, DoorDash's infrastructure would overpower Instacart. DoorDash recognizes that it needs to attract as many grocery customers as possible to achieve a dominating position in the supermarket fulfillment business (Luna, 2023). In the early stage of the COVID-19 epidemic, most restaurants in the United States had to stop offering dine-in service and instead focus on drive-through, contactless delivery, and takeout options.
