Name: Keith Strege JR Class: CJ 140 Date: January 19 th , 2024 Instructor: Todd Coxe Scenario 1 The crisis communication technique I would utilize to immediately handle the situation is to get eye to eye with the mother, be empathetic, open minded, listen to her concerns and explain with a soft gentle voice that I understand where she is coming from, and her feelings are validated. I would maintain my professional status, remain calm, and be direct with the decision that the court has made and explain what the results are. I understand children especially if described the way they were in this scenario the way that is was, the daughter must be attached to the mother meaning there would be a separation anxiety so I must also explain to the daughter what is going to happen and begin to explain to the little one in a manner easy and non-threatening as possible to make her think that this will only be a temporary situation. I would explain to the mother the following: The best things now for your daughter's care and wellbeing, this meaning that is she genuinely wants to make a difference this is the time and place to begin making life changing decisions to better herself for her daughter. I am not and neither is the court system stating she is a bad mother but now and based on the current situation she is currently unfit to care for her daughter's well-being and that is our first priority. After the hour passes and the mother is still
not wanting to comply, I would speak to her in regard to what we had spoken about earlier by letting her know with the willpower she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to. This is only a temporary situation if she chooses it to be and that first step is complying to court orders and working towards becoming the fit parent that she is needed to be and that her daughter's needs as well for the order to be overturned for her to gain custody of her children again. We understand that this is a difficult decision within itself and not one wants this to happen to them at all. We know the mother was not reacting until the order was provided to her which then makes us believe this was a result of the difficult news, she received from DCF. Once the mother begins to calm down and comply then we can aid her with a plan of action on how to change the outcome of the court order to gain custody back and what will need to happen in the meantime. There is paperwork in which she will be given solidifying that all grounds were covered as well as a treatment plan if needed, next steps, and her acknowledgement of what they spoke about. Scenario Two: Based on the scenario the technique that I would personally utilize is my negotiation technique as this will allow me to have a little power and make sure that I can steer the situation into what and where I want it to go. I would speak to the group of older gendlemen and gentleladies to understand the sense of urgency, what is so important that they would risk everything to get arrested if need be. Then I would try to reason with them and determine what their ultimate goal in this case and run down a scenario with them to make them understand my side of things and where I am coming from as a security officer and what my duties are. If I were a Police Officer in this scenario, I would utilize the above negotiations techniques in the same manner and find out if there is anything that I can do to help them so that this de-escalates, and we can all leave
