HIS 100 Module Five Activity Template: Historical Interpretations
Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
The Great London Smog
Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots of your current event.
Exploring my research question has really made me think and stand my ground more regarding my current event. I have found that there were clear signs of danger to public health, especially with what was known, which I feel is relatable to now. The process of mining for the materials needed to construct electric car batteries, plus that they may not be 100% recyclable, show a clear and present danger just as the poor quality of coal did which played a part in my historical event. Explain how biased perspectives influence what is known about both your historical and current events.
So far in my research of my historical event I have not found much bias, but when it comes to my current event about electric vehicles there is plenty out there on both sides. Those who are for and against the planet moving in the direction of everyone transitioning to electric vehicles have their biased to influence the “truth”. There are some out there who will take the time to compare and contrast both sides to really learn the truth that is down the middle. But since my current event is a hot button item and has been so politicized you really have to dig deep to wade through the biased perspectives and not let them influence you one way or the other. Propose how the narrative about your historical event might change if it were told from a missing perspective.
I spent time reviewing the sources I have used so far in researching my historical event and feel that I have not found any missing perspectives. At this point in my research, I believe the sources have stayed more neutral and to the point of facts. I supposed that if there were more narratives from those who survived getting sick from the event there could have been more information gathered and maybe another perspective added to the equation. Could there have been more going on than what has been told so far? That is a possibility, maybe the government
knew more than what has been learned at this point, but I have not been able to find any evidence of that at this time.
Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing perspective.
During my brief research of the current event, I have yet to really find many narratives from the ones working in the mining sites for the materials. It’s possible that if more stories came out from the men and women digging up and collecting the elements needed to construct the batteries for electric vehicles it could change the direction a lot of people are trying to steer the country and world into. If more truth and information could be released about the dangers and hazards of the operations needed to construct these batteries and more so of the effects and impacts, they could have from their lack of recyclability it could make massive changes to the narratives. There’s a possibility that there might be more pushback or research forced through litigations before the continued pushes are made for everyone to make the transition into these vehicles.
