HIS 100 Module Three Activity Template: Historical Context Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
Is about Marsha P Johnson and what she did for the LGBTQ community. The stonewall riots.
Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event.
During the Stonewall Riots of June 28, 1969, there was a series of riots and protests in New York prompted by police raiding a gay bar. It appeared the police were targeting LGBTQ+ employees and patrons of bars. Members of the LGBTQ+ community considered gay bars to be safe places. There were no social or legal protections for members of the community during this time period, and same-sex marriage was illegal.
Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
When the Stonewall riots broke out in New York, Marsha P Johnson played a crucial role as a leader. The drag community and the sex workers' community were a part of Marsha's life. According to reports, she was caring and willing to help anyone in need. On night one of the riots, Marsha was at the Sconeswall Inn. She was widely reported to have initiated the riots and led the crowds among eyewitnesses. The Stonewall riots sparked a series of important movements for the LGBTQ community, which she continued to participate in afterward.
Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Marsha P Johnson was motivated to participate in the Stonewall riots because she wanted equal rights and to live her life the way she wanted. A happy life was what she wanted as well as the others. The 1960s were a challenging time for Trans African Americans, and she likely faced many challenges.
Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event.
In the 1960's, gay bars were frequently raided by the police because the community was not accepted. A police tip usually alerted the bars to their impending arrival. Due to the lack of legal samesex marriage and their reputation as outcasts, they finally felt the need to take action and fight for their rights. For the LGBTQ community, this was a turning point in the long battle they had ahead.
Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of your topic.
A connection between two related topics helps you see what has been done and what needs to be done in order to improve the present. In order to make improvements, you can examine what went wrong. There is still a fight for equal rights in the community, as demonstrated by the
PRIDE rally. Community progress has been made, but more work needs to be done. As we study
history, we gain insight into and appreciation for what those before us overcame to achieve the status our nation and the world enjoy today.
