Part 1: Creating a Research Question
1.
Describe how your assumptions, beliefs, and values influenced your choice of topic.
I think a major push for picking my topic is the timeless and universal struggle we have had since
the beginning of time when it comes to racial conflict, and the struggle to accept diversities and the mess it has caused in the world. Historically we have seen some horrific things because of it, but it doesn’t seem like people in today’s world understand and is educated enough to see how we are falling back into the conflicts over racial diversity.
2.
Discuss the significance of your historical research question in relation to your current event.
Researching events from the past, always benefits knowledge of current events. There is correlation between the past and present. Researching the Tulsa Massacre puts so much perspective on how small conflicts can boil and grow into something catastrophic. It is important
to be educated in that because we see so many small conflicts in today’s world and I think we live in a more sensitive, and mentally unstable time. In today’s world we do not have the complete segregation as there was over 100 years ago, but we do have problems with accepting diversities, and we have outrages over it still. Another aspect to consider is the legal system and how we have it in place now better than in the past, because our justice system has not allowed opposing groups to wreak havoc over a matter such as the accusations against Rowland of assaulting Sarah Page, we do not have groups of people swarming to a courthouse to battle it out because they feel they need to take matters in their own hands. We have opinions and we have moments of anger when we see the news of crime, but we do not rely on ourselves to take
justice into our own hands. 3.
Explain how you used sources to finalize your research question.
Going through the sources I have chosen, I focus on the narrative, and the reason the source was created, such as the report from the Race Riot Committee in 1997, they diligently worked to
provide answers about the massacre that overtime was lost or not recognized. The report did lead to how much bias was leaning in favor of the white communities, and how the economic impacts affected much more than Greenwood District, the area in Tulsa the massacre occurred. By gathering all the knowledge of why the insurance claims were being denied, and what was and was not being done to rebuild the neighborhoods, it was focusing on those facts that helped
me better shape and finalize my research question. Research question I used to do my research
Along with the effects of the economic losses on both black and white communities, how did the
severity of racial conflict still happening affect the restoration of both black and white communities and were the restoration efforts favorable more to whites, or blacks after the massacre?

Part 2: Building Context to Address Questions
1.
Describe the context of your historical event that influenced your current event.
In 1921 racial conflict was very prominent. White Americans during that time did not agree that the African Americans could ever be on equal levels with them. On May 30, 1921 a young African American shoe shiner named Dick Rowland was accused of assaulting a white elevator operator named Sarah Page. The next day there was an article printed in the paper about how Rowland had tried raping Sarah Page, and there was a lynching planned. That led to mobs of both African Americans and Whites to gather at the courthouse. There was a confrontation between an armed African American, who was there to protect Rowland, and a White protester,
which resulted in the death of the white protester. This led to the white mob to be infuriated and that is how the massacre ignited. With the context being racial conflict and smaller conflicts snowballing, look at the BLM, we had the death of George Floyd, and that sparked anger within the African American Communities, and it ignited their anger, and we had riots, and protests, nothing as catastrophic as the Tulsa Massacre, but the context seems very similar. 2.
Describe a historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
I think a key group that participated in the event of the Tulsa Massacre is the writers and editors
at the Tulsa Tribune. I feel like media and news of any form plays a huge role in events happening. Looking at the way stories and reports get covered by media and news outlets has a huge impact on how the event transpires. In this case I feel like it is a major factor in fueling the fire, so to speak. During that time, news of an alleged assault on a young white woman, where the man accused was black, is a fast way to send out the information and they wasted no time to wait for facts and with the racial conflict and segregation being such a huge part of life during that time it outraged the whites. When a news outlet or any other form of media information going to the public reports on a story without waiting for facts, it can lead to bias in favor of the wrong party, and events snowball from there. 3.
Explain the historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event
.
Because racial conflict was so prominent, the motivation behind the Tulsa Tribune was clearly bias in favor of the Whites in the community. Thus, pushing for the whites to be outraged over the story that Rowland allegedly assaulted Sarah. Rowland being black, and Sarah being white. That put it in motion, whites were looking to start a fight, blacks were trying to protect themselves. Part 3: Examining How Bias Impacts Narrative
1.
Describe a narrative you identified while researching the history of your historical event
.
I think the Race Riot Commission and their report gives the best layout of factual topic points to really break down, and understand the impact of the event, it discusses the economical side, it discusses the racial conflict, and within its 200 pages, it gives researchers an abundance of 2
information to dive into for any particular aspect of the event. The narrative is a huge way to take in information, and you must be diligent about facts, and if you choose a narrative with too much bias you can often find yourself missing our misinterpreting facts. The narrative among my
sources is from people, and groups who have little to no bias on the conflict itself and were able to gather facts on the event and the events surrounding the massacre in a professional, factual, and presentable way for future researchers to learn from and build upon. 2.
Articulate how biased perspectives presented in primary and secondary sources influence what is known or unknown about history
.
When you come across biased perspectives when doing research, you are not able to gain the most out of that source, because it most likely falls one sided, and you must be able to look at all
angles of what you are studying. With my historical event stemming from racial conflict, in 1921,
that was a time very biased in favor of the white population. So, finding sources that helped shed a light on the impacts to both blacks and whites was a little more difficult. If you focus on a one-sided, bias perspective, you have a higher chance of missing information, or you get wrong information. The phrase “there is always two sides to every story” is a good rule of thumb when doing historical research, but there can be many sides to consider when researching. 3.
Identify the perspectives that you think are missing from your historical event’s narrative.
I think there could be a huge benefit from having the perspectives of Sarah Pages family, and the
perspective of Rowlands family as well. I would love to learn more about the impacts of law enforcement and how they later found issues within the police department. Outside of the Race
Riot Committee and their report on the massacre, there are statements and perspectives missing from insurance companies and the claims being made to recover the neighborhoods burned. Perspectives that could help us see the internal damage, family incomes, jobs, schools, personal relationships and how both blacks and whites suffered mentally after the event, there are a few perspectives that would be greatly beneficial to the research that are missing. These would prove importance if we knew weather or not there were any lawsuits made against the Page family, or if there were any local impacts within the community that came together to restore the Greenwood District. Part 4: Connecting the Past with the Present
1.
Explain how researching its historical roots helped improve your understanding of your current event.
When we look back through our history, it is all linked in some way to our daily lives, and current
events in the world. When it comes to my topic of the Tulsa Massacre, and the current things happening with Racial Conflict blooming the BLM, we see that the tension between the races never went away, and we will probably always have conflict, but over the last 100 years or longer in history it has always been more favorable to the whites, and it almost feels like a swap in roles with current events, we are seeing so many things that are more geared to the African Americans, with black history month, all black schools, churches, etc., but if we were to take that same idea but replace it with whites, it is deemed unacceptable and racist. What I’m saying here is, there is still a division, blacks vs. whites, only roles have been switched. But with being 3
