SW 203 Introduction to SW Dr. Stephens JJ SDG Chapter 6 – Questions for discussion (October 22, 2017) Procedure: Please answer the questions below 1. Review the material on Native American history, treaties, and federal control. Discuss the following questions and be prepared to summarize your conclusions during a subsequent full class discussion. ( Sharon Sabi, Jacquelyn Blake ) a. To what extent did U. S. policy concerning Native Americans reflect a racist orientation versus a perspective that appreciated and nurtured cultural differences? The extent to which the U.S. reflects ill will towards the Native American population stems from statistics showing that they are the least healthy, the poorest, and the least educated group. Most remain economically and politically disadvantaged. This could also go way back in time with the Signed law by President Andrew Jackson, strongly supported by the South whom was eager to gain access to the lands inhabited by the "Five Civilized Tribes." Though the act was intended to be voluntary removal, significant pressure was put onto the tribes' chiefs to vacate and led to the inevitable removal of most Indians from the states. This contrast comes from the American Constitution that is non- discriminatory with things consisting of Civil Rights, Affirmative Action, and the believe that all people will be treated fairly and equally which is not always true. b. What types of policies might have been more sensitive and supportive of Native Americans’ cultural differences and strengths? Some policies and thing that have been in favor of promoting Native Americans best interests are the Bureau of Indian Affairs which is a government agency created in the 1800s to oversee federal policy toward Native Americans. The Indian Reorganization Act1934 New Deal program that recognized the interests of Native Americans and halted the sale of tribal lands. It restored tribes as legal entities that could apply for charters of incorporation and allowed them to pursue business ventures as tribes and to seek enforcement of earlier treaties. Ended the period of assimilation. Lastly the Indian Self-Determination Act1974 act that granted Native American tribes control of federal aid programs on the reservations and oversight of their own schools. c. What policies do you think should have been instituted during these times? The rights that I believe should have been instituted are something along the lines of the Civil Rights Act. I also believe that reparations should have been given to Native Americans just as the American gave reoperations to Asian Americans who fought in the World War. The native Americans played a big role to the untied States of Americans even being present so their need to be polices put in place to thank them and show appreciation for them settling in their lands and tribes where they did. 2. Review the information on personal rights of public assistance recipients and be prepared to summarize your conclusions during a subsequent full class discussion. a. To what extent should the government be allowed to intervene in the personal lives of women who receive financial assistance?
