Instructions: write a brief essay explaining what you think went wrong in the United States which led to the Civil War. You can use the chart in the Explore pages as well as information in the previous lessons, especially Lesson 3. During the times of the Civil War, the South and the North had many different conflicting views, economically, and socially. Because they had different beliefs it led to the civil war, and the complete outbreak of chaos pinning the South and the North against one another. As the U.S. took certain things from the British government's Magna Carta, they developed the Constitution. The biggest thing that went wrong, which is most discussed, is the argument for abolishing slavery. The North and South had such different views on slavery it caused a majority of the war. Since the south's main base of their economy was agriculture which was run by the slaves they became very worried when the north being more industrial with wages, wanted to fight for abolishing slavery. Since the slaves were forced to do work, and were not paid the same in colonial times, the owners of the land made all of the profit, since slaves had no wages. Unlike the North where they had more industrial work, they paid low prices still for the work done. However, they were not suffering the same as slaves in the South. This primarily led to the fall of the states leading to the Civil War. One other major cause of the Civil War was the Anti-Federalists group. They believed that the federal government was given too much power. Since the Constitution gave most of the power to the federal government it made these Anti-Feds incredibly angry. Since the Constitution states anyone can abolish or revise the federal government under destructive conditions and beliefs, the Anti-Feds believed they had the right to overthrow the federal government as they believed they were given too much power and the states had less. There were many different issues that led to the fall of the States leading to the Civil War. Economically the South was threatened by the act of abolishing slavery since it made up the majority of the slave and plantation owner’s earnings. Along with the Anti-Federalists believed they had the right to overthrow the federal government since they held too much more.
