Who was Prince Henry, Navigator in the Age of Exploration? a. List with brief explanation THREE reasons he helped raise funds explorations for Portugal? Prince Harry raised funds for explorations of Portugal because he was curious about science and exploration. He also wanted to expand the power of the Portuguese empire by creating colonies that would provide raw materials, most importantly gold and lastly, he wanted to spread Christianity more specifically Catholicism around the world. b. What did he “spark” that makes him important to history? He sparked Europe's age of exploration which connected the people of the world. 2. Explain the three end results listed below of Prince Henry’s efforts during this time period. Listen carefully on the TCAST slide “Portuguese Explorations” for details. a. European Colonization- The major empires of the time were the Spanish, the Dutch, France, and Portugal all wanted to expand their influence through colonies and spread their religions. b. Beginning of Capitalism- Prophets created new ways of doing business or trade and would court investors to help with the cost in return for big prophets which would then begin the international slave trade in Portugal from Africa. c. Transatlantic Slave Trade- the international slave trade from Africa would begin. 3. Explain how “technological” advances helped increase the efficiency, safety, and overall exploration during this time. a. Compass- Used the magnetic field of the north pole that gave sailors on the high seas the east, west, south, and north.
b. Astrolabe- A metal disc that had the stars and planets engraved on it, it provided sailors with an idea of where they were in regards to location on the seas. c. Sextant- Used angles at 60 degrees and the stars could plot a more direct route they were headed. d. Mercator Projection Map- Explores on land could predict terrain and explore the land in a safer, faster way. e. The Caravel- A trading ship, not a warship that can move faster than the old heavy war and trade ships. 4. Explain the explorations and discoveries of the following: a. Vasco de Gama- The Vasco de Gama sailed around the African continent and discovered India and opened worlds of great treasures and spices. It linked Europe and Asian continents by ocean. b. Magellan- The Magellan sailed around the African continent. However, his greatest discovery came as he sailed the South American continent and discovered the Pacific Ocean. 5. What was the Treaty of Tordesillas and why was it needed? The Treaty of Tordesillas divided their spheres of influence in the New World of the Americas. It was needed to avoid direct competition by not colonizing the same areas.
