Empire State Building: The Bricks of Ego? • In 1931, when the former New York governor, Al Smith and former General Motors executive, John J. Raskob, built the world’s tallest building; Raskob was motivated, in part, by a rivalry. • Raskob wanted a building that would literally and figuratively put Walter Chrysler’s building in the shade. • If there was ever a structure built with “the bricks of ego”, it was the Empire State Building.
The “Empty State Building” • In the month of May of 1931, when the Empire State Building was officially opened, New York was on the verge of the Great Depression. • Questions were raised about the timing of investments at such a grand scale on a project only to appease Smith and Raskob’s egos when the economy was collapsing. • Infuriated people of NYC rechristened the new addition to the NYC skyline as “ The Empty State Building .”
