Tutorial Week 5 Ancient Coins This exercise will explore numismatics (the study of coins) with a set of coin casts from the city of Croton (Kroton), a Greek colony in southern Italy. These coin casts were collected in the late 1960s from museums around the world by Dr. Peter Bicknell, then professor in Classics at Monash. I recently rediscovered these in a storage cupboard in our museum under renovation. We have a collection of over 1,000 casts from which I have selected 10 distinctive types for your analysis. Each group will be given two coin types to analyse. Using the Kroton coin information sheet, the Greek letters PDF, and the ruler and magnifying glass try to answer the following questions about your group’s coins. 1. Can you identify the obverse (front or main) and reverse (back or secondary) sides of these coins? Young Herakles is on the obverse Tripod is on the reverse 2. What manufacturing technique was used to mint the coins? 3. What is the size range of the diameters of your coins (in mm)? 20-22 mm 4. What Greek letters can you identify on your coins (see letters handout)? Koppa, rho, omikron which is represents kro which is short for kroton. 5. What images can you identify on your coins (see coin info handout)? On the coin that I have been studying I have a picture of a tripod which is the main symbol of Kroton. Often associated with apollo, and it has a picture of chains ( fillets ) often associated with victory and competitions. 6. Search for a similar coin from Croton at the British Museum and record the number here to share with class: https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/term/x51774 (click on Related Objects)
RPK,p271A.8 7. Can you use the information you have collected to estimate the date of your types (see coin info handout)? From what information that I have I can estimate that this coin was produced at about 425BC-350BC. 8. What other information about Kroton can you derive from your analysis of these coins (see coin info handout for history of Kroton? 9. With reference to the article by Holt on the invention of coinage, reflect on the possible goals of this early coinage in Magna Graecia
