The source I have chosen illustrates some roles that women played during the American Revolution and highlights how women of different classes acted differently regarding the Stamp Act. The authors of this source are not specifically given. Although, it is shown that these excerpts have come from the “Boston Gazette '' and the “Country journal,” so I would reasonably assume a reporter working for those papers during that time is the author of this source. What is trying to be shown is the impact that women had on the political and economical environment during that time. This reading actually surprised me because I did not know that women were actively speaking on politics in an organized group during this time. I did not know about the “Daughters of Liberty” before reading these excerpts. Reading this made me feel happy to know that women were voicing their opinions, values, and stances as much as they could during a time that made it almost impossible for them to do so. It is also interesting to know how women influenced the cultural environment during the American Revolution. The role of women during this era was never taught to me, or was glazed over, during highschool history classes. This does not match my preconception of the role that women played during the American Revolution because I had previously thought that since women were not encouraged to participate in politics and the economy that they had just simply not even tried to. I was never made aware of the massive role that women played in the culture of the colonies during the American Revolution. Although, this completely discounts my prior knowledge. I believe that the opinions of people during this time towards this source would have been mostly positive since the majority of the people reading these articles were most likely supporting the revolution. The people who supported the revolution would have seen these acts as patriotic in a sense. Although, it should be noted that the people who were remaining loyal to Britain would probably view these acts negatively and disapprove. This quote from our textbook supports these claims, “Homespun clothing quickly became a marker of one’s virtue and patriotism, and women were an important part of this cultural shift.”
