HIS 100 Module Four Activity Template: Historical Narratives Locate an additional secondary source relevant to your historical event. Use all four of your sources (two primary and two secondary) to answer the questions below. Replace the bracketed text with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: Chernobyl Attempt to write the APA style citations for your four sources. Include links to each source. You will not be penalized for incorrect citation format. "Memo Report from the Head of the KGB Administration under the Ukr. In my primary sources, the memo report presents a narrative of leadership and oversight. The purpose of the memo was to outline the construction violations found in the Chernobyl power plant. The second primary source, the Chernobyl liquidators, is the stories of three people who were called upon to help in the Chernobyl clean-up effort and their lives before, during, and after. Starting with my first secondary source, Environmental Health Perspectives, this source contains data and information on how the disaster affected cancer rates in and around Russia. My second secondary source, Agricultural and environmental impacts, discusses the impacts of Chernobyl on wildlife, crops, and bodies of water. The environmental impacts were felt in Scotland, Sweden, and the UK and how the environment fairs today.
Describe one narrative that has significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of your historical event. Personally, I really like the newspaper article on the Chernobyl liquidators. I think it really puts the event in perspective for most of us that live average lives dealing with what we consider disasters. The article includes firsthand accounts from three liquidators who describe their experiences in the Chernobyl clean-up effort. One man’s story, Ivan Bokun, really stood out to me as he explains his average life as a mechanic that went from repairing cars and SUVs to military vehicles caked in deadly nuclear radiation. Ivan goes on to explain that within a month five of his fellow liquidators passed and he became disabled and has had a permanent headache since November 1987 ( Şafak, 2021). Explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical research question. Please provide your revised research question and then explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical event. This source helps me understand the event from a unique perspective. I have never dealt with nuclear radiation or been a part of a national catastrophe such as Chernobyl. Hearing Ivans story helps me get some perspective on the situation and makes it easier from me to digest. Please include your research question here (you will not be graded on this). - What were the health complication Chernobyl liquidators suffered after the disaster?
