HIS 100 Module Three Activity Template: Historical Context Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: Iranian Revolution Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event. I am focusing on the social perspective in relation to the Iranian Revolution. More specifically, women’s fight for increased rights. Beginning in the late 19 th century, women began fighting for increased rights. The first Shah and later his son, helped their efforts to bring women rights. Such as, the abolishment of the veil, women being granted the right to vote and being elected to parliament and senate. However, during the 1979 revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini and the government rescinded every law it passed regarding women’s rights. Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event. Women played a large part in fighting for their rights as well as during the 1979 revolution that took them away. Fighting in the streets, starting networks between each other, and starting the women’s movement in Iran. Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event. Women had little rights for themselves in Iran which is why they started to fight for them in the late 19 th century. They wanted the freedom to choose in what they wore, freedom to vote, and other freedoms women across the world had. They wanted the same for women in their country, which was a motivation for their participation. Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event. The social perspective influenced the Iranian Revolution because a social group, women, fought in the revolution for their freedoms. During this time, the women’s movement in America was happening where American women were fighting for their right for equal pay, the right to not get married, and so forth. Western culture did not know about the women’s fight in Iran, so they had to fight for it themselves. Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of your topic. Connecting the Iranian Revolution to the United States government not ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment will give an understanding of how important equal rights having is for every woman no matter their country. It can give a modern viewpoint on the equal rights movement and relate it to the Iranian Revolution.
