1. What are the arguments in favor of Tribes to have full sovereignty over their lands,
reservations and natural resources?
Tribes that have full sovereignty over their lands, reservation, and natural resources have
complete control over their resources thus eliminating developmental disagreements and further
controlling the poverty issue among tribal lands. Due to the high poverty levels unemployment is
at an all time high and when government agencies are using or charging for those resources it
adds to the financial burdens of Tribes. Using their reservations is seen as more vital than
permitting the resources to be used commercially.
2. What are the arguments of some tribes, to keep the federal government involved as a Trustee
of Indian lands?
Some tribes argue to keep the federal government involved as a Trustee of Indian lands to ensure
the well being of their people. Some tribes view self-sufficiency as a way to share their cultural
values. "Environmental stewards of the land" is supported by the federal government's role as a
Trustee of Indian lands (Sage).
3. How has the need for energy production sparked this centuries' old discussion regarding tribal
sovereignty and federal protection of lands?
The need for energy production sparked the centuries’ old discussion regarding tribal sovereignty
and federal protection of lands due to societies evolutionary need for advancement. This has
contributed to the unemployment rate causing tribes to decide if they are going to use their
resources on their land to help the tribe financially or preserve their culture.
4. What are the arguments in favor and against energy development playing a role in lifting tribes
out of poverty?
The argument in favor and against energy development playing a role in lifting tribes out of
poverty has become more apparent and crucial to some tribes' survival. Tribes have gone back
and forth over this issue, some supporting it for the continuous development while others believe
in territorial sovereignty. The rest of the world advances with the technology and capitalism that
is believed to be corrupting the government and their need for power. Tribes can benefit
financially from the use of their resources and still manage to maintain their culture and future.
5. What are the ethical and moral considerations illustrated by history? What are the moral
considerations illustrated by the bible? Use biblical scripture where appropriate.
The ethical and moral considerations illustrated by history have been a constant sacrifice from
Native American in order for the expansion of the English people. Though time has shown the
slow progression to make amends to the native people, we are still not seen equally. The world is
still to this day fighting over land, resources, and what they believe is best for the people. Moral
considerations illustrated by the bible show Christians to treat those who are different with
respect and seen as a child of God.
We are all equally made in God's image (Genesis 1:26-28)
“The rich and poor have this in common: The Lord made them both” (Proverbs 22:2).
