CLAS 016 Quiz 4
In 250-300 words discuss the ways in which external factors (persecutions, regional identities,
e.g.) and internal factors (controversies over Gnosticism, Montanism and Arius, the authority of
the bishop, e.g.) helped shape the development of early Christianity during the course of the 2
nd
and 3

centuries. You may choose to focus on one or more of the following: texts that Christians
read (was the Old Testament included, e.g.?), ideas on the nature of Jesus, the usefulness of
Greek philosophy for understanding Christian concepts.
Christianity originated in Judea in the first century CE, starting as a small, unorganized
sect that promised salvation after death. The spread of Chrisitanity was powerful and its
developments influenced the growth, theology, and organization of the early Christian
communities. The development of early Christianity during the 2
nd
and 3
rd
centuries was
significantly influenced and shaped by a complex interplay of both internal and external factors.
Externally, persecutions and regional identities played crucial roles, while internally,
controversies over Gnosticism, Monanism, Arius, and the authority of the bishop had a profound
impact on shaping Christian doctrine and practices.
As Chrisitanity continued to spread and grow, it developed heavily in the Roman Empire.
The incline of Christians in this region led to its persecution as the Romans did not practice the
same religion. Christians, deep in their faith, refused to worship the emperor as well as the Gods,
as the Romans practiced polytheism. The sporadic persecutions under various Roman emperors
influenced the ways in which Christians organized themselves and expressed their faith. The
threat of persecutions established a sense of solidarity among Christians, strengthening the bonds
of the early Christian communities. Additionally, regional identities played a significant role as
diverse cultural contexts influenced the interpretation of Christian teachings. The spread of
Christianity across the Roman Empire led to the incorporation of local customs and traditions
into Christian practices, contributing to the development of distinct regional Christian identities
and theology.
Internally, theological controversies played a central role in shaping early Christian
thought. Debates over Gnosticism, Montanism, and Arianism compelled Christians to articulate
and defend their beliefs. Theological disputes often led to the formulation of creeds and doctrines
that clarified essential elements of Christian faith, particularly concerning the nature of Jesus.
The question of ecclesiastical authority and the role of the bishops in the early Christian
communities were central to their organization. The development of a hierarchical structure
contributed to the stability and cohesion of the growing Christian congregations. The role of
Greek philosophy also became significant, as early Christian theologians sought to articulate
Christian concepts in terms familiar to the intellectual currents of the time. Greek philosophical
ideas provided a framework for discussing the nature of God, Christ, and the human soul.
Early Christian texts were diverse, with the Old Testament having a strong foundation.
Early Christians viewed the Old Testament as foundational, seeing it as containing prophecies
and prefigurations of Christ. The relationship between the Old and New Testaments was a
subject of theological reflection and interpretation, heavily contributing to the development of
Christian theology.
In conclusion, the development of early Christianity during the 2
nd
and 3

centuries was
a dynamic process shaped by external pressures, regional influences, theological controversies,
