Religion Extremism is defined as “any behavior, attitude, or belief outside the norm of
religious beliefs or practices” (Bošković et al., 2022 page 20).
Religious extremism is marked by
individuals adopting and escalating beliefs and practices beyond the typical expectations within
their religion. This deviation involves interpreting beliefs or practices in a manner that differs
from the mainstream understanding of that religion. Al-Qaeda stands as an example of a group
associated with religious extremism. Al-Qaeda has been linked to numerous terrorist activities,
notably the September 11, 2001, attack in the United States, considered one of the most
significant in history. “Al-Qaeda merged with a number of other militant Islamist organizations,
including Egypt’s Islamic Jihad and the Islamic Group, and on several occasions its leaders
declared holy war against the United States” (Britannica, 2022).
