1. EXPLAIN the direct effect of the Ten
Commandments on the everyday life of Hebrew
society.
2. IDENTIFY the causes of the rise and fall of the
Assyrians.
3. Are there any similarities to the rise of the United
States as a world leader? Are there similarities that
might lead to the demise of the power of the United
States?
Moses, the Hebrew leader, introduced the Ten Commandments as
a summary of God's laws. These Commandments, moral and
religious rules, were set in place to provide a standard of behavior
and interactions. These are laws that Hebrews must obey. The
Hebrew society was to follow these laws and prohibited murder,
dishonesty, thieving, and others. However, these Commandments
emphasized the importance worship of only one God and taking a
day to rest and worship (Sabbath). These Commandments also
helped maintain the social order of the Hebrew society. The Ten
Commandments that we still have today helped shape the
Hebrews by implementing the importance of family. The Ten
Commandments that we still go by today helped shape the
Hebrew community by implementing the importance of family,
providing guidance for religious practices, and building a legal
system to better their community. Everyone needs to be held to a
certain standard to maintain a good relationship with God and
among a society/community.
The rise of the Assyrians contributed to military strength and an
administrative efficiency system. By 700 B.C.E., the Assyrians
were at the height of their power. Through years of practice, the
Assyrians effectively developed a strong military to help their
empire. Under Shalmaneser III, the Assyrians became well
organized and disciplined, allowing them to use other military
tactics that contributed to their rise. However, they began to fall
because of conflicts among the Assyrians and outside threats.
After Ashurbanipal's death, that is when the Assyrians
degenerated. For example, in the brutal attack on the city of
Babylon, they and other empires like Medes posed external
threats to the Assyrians. Weak leaders and corruption also
contributed to the fall of the Assyrians.
Though very different, the United States and the Assyrians share
some similarities. One included military power. The United States
established authority after WWII, while the Assyrians created a
strong empire. They both also left behind cultural influence. For
example, the United States is known for its music, film, and style.
The Assyrians were remembered for their art, literature, and
architecture. Similarities between the United States and the
Assyrians that would lead to the demise of their power would be
overdevelopment, internal rebellions, and pushback of people.
The United States was involved in many military interventions,
which strained its resources and diminished its power. The
Assyrians had an aggressive expansion policy, leading to their
downfall. Moving on to conflicts within an empire or country, the
Assyrians faced dissent from seizing territories. These actions
played a central role in the decline of their empire. The United
States similarly experienced something similar, such as the Civil
War, which weakened the country. Lastly, both also faced a
backlash from the people. Because of their brutal tactics and
rules, many people resented the Assyrians. For their foreign
policies and unnecessary involvement, the United States faced
negative consequences.
