Brittany Knight American History 11/10/2023 Paper Proposal For this assignment, the topic I picked is How did the experience of women during the Civil War shape their lives and influence societal changes? My goal is to discuss the various roles women took on during the war, such as working as nurses, spies, and even soldiers. Then I would like to highlight the impact these experiences had on challenging the traditional gender norms for women and paving the way for women's rights. Another topic that I will discuss will be their involvement in the workforce and the war effort led to increased independence and agency. My thesis statement: The Civil War provided women with new opportunities, challenging traditional gender roles and paving the way for societal changes in women's rights and roles. To be able to discuss the experience of women during the Civil War the best source to use would be a Diary. Diaries can be a valuable source for your paper because they provide firsthand accounts of women's experiences during the Civil War. They offer personal insights, emotions, and perspectives that may not be found in other historical documents. Diaries allow you to explore the daily lives, challenges, and triumphs of women during this period, giving you a more intimate understanding of their experiences. By analyzing diaries, you can uncover valuable details and anecdotes that contribute to a richer and more nuanced portrayal of women's contributions and the societal changes they influenced. Another primary source I will use will be Letters. They provide a unique perspective on women's experiences during the Civil War. Letters often contain personal thoughts, emotions, and details that can offer valuable insights into the lives of women during that time. They can

reveal the challenges they faced, their hopes and fears, and their contributions to the war effort. By analyzing letters, you can gain a deeper understanding of the impact of the war on women's lives and the societal changes that resulted. So, incorporating letters into my research would add a personal and intimate dimension to my paper. The last primary source that I will use will be the textbook. The textbook’s chapter 13 is on the Civil War. The textbook provides a comprehensive overview of the topic, drawing from various primary and secondary sources. The textbook can help offer a broader understanding of the historical context, key events, and the roles women played during that time. It may also provide an analysis and interpretation from scholars that can support your arguments. I will also use a scholarly article as my secondary source. Scholarly articles are written by experts in the field and undergo a rigorous review process, ensuring their credibility and reliability. Throughout this paper, I will explore how the experiences of women during the Civil War shaped their lives and had a profound influence on societal changes. I will explain the understanding of the experience of women during the Civil War, and how it is important. I will discuss how their resilience, sacrifices, and activism paved the way for advancements in women’s rights and challenged traditional gender roles. I will highlight the lasting impact of their contributions to society.
