Mini assignment 2 Part 1: The cultural heritage location that I chose is Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the Dawn Settlement, located in Dresden Ontario. Part 2: Uncle Tom's Cabin Historic Site . National Trust for Canada. (2021, November 22). Retrieved March 13, 2022, from https://nationaltrustcanada.ca/destinations/uncle-toms- cabin-historic-site Part 3: I think this location should be used as an augmented reality tourism experience because it is a location with a lot of history. Founded in 1841 by Josiah Henson, a former enslaved person from the United States. He helped create the Dawn Settlement which was a safe area for black refugees. The Dawn Settlement was founded in Dresden Ontario which was the final destination of the Underground railroad. The settlement featured a church, sawmill, smokehouse, and cemetery. I think augmented reality could be used to tell the story of Josiah Henson escaping slavery and the historic importance of the Dawn settlement and the different buildings located on the site. Augmented reality would help tourists gain more information as well as offer a unique third dimension to displays, bringing objects to life. This would also draw more attraction to the historic site as it offers a new experience that utilizes today’s technology. Part 4: Storytelling can be used to ensure the experience is immersive, interactive, and community-oriented. According to the S. Smith article, there are many different types of stories that are relevant to place-based tourism. I think the story of history could be used to achieve an immersive experience. The Dawn Settlement is a historic site and an important location in the abolitionism movement. After Josiah Henson and his family successfully escaped slavery in the United States he came to Canada where he purchased over 200 acres to create a safe space for black refugees. Augmented reality could feature imagery created from historic stories about the Dawn Settlement and Josiah Henson Part 5: The development of augmented reality technology has been a huge success and it has been able to offer great benefits to the tourism industry. With the ability to provide tourists with a uniquely immersive experience through smartphones it has been a great discovery. But there are some drawbacks and challenges that are faced with augmented reality in tourism. AR technology requires the use of mobile devices with a fast CPU, large RAM capacity, a camera and Wi-Fi or data. These mobile devices are something that would not be accessible to all tourists and certain locations may not have access to Wi-Fi or Data. The cost associated with developing an augmented reality is very high, which could be a drawback if it does not draw
more attraction and create more cash flow. This technology would also require someone who is very skilled to develop, maintain, and update.
