Melody Ormsby 14 November 2023 HIS 118 1.1 Discussion: An Increasingly Global World My name is Melody Ormsby and I prefer to be called Melody, I was born in Kingston Jamaica, but I live in Waukegan Illinois. I am majoring in Psychology with a concentration in Child and Adolescent Development and Mental Health. This will be my last term as I am graduating in December. Who were the major European powers that embarked on these voyages and what inspired their excursions? According to our text, longer maritime expeditions were undertaken by the Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish, French and Russians. Their travel inspirations vary in intensity. They all want money, power, and control. What types of new innovations allowed them to travel longer distances and what were the origins of these innovations? Innovations such as the magnetic compass and astrolabe allowed European powers to go even further. New ship designs, such as the caravel, with rudders and jibs, allowed ships to sail for longer periods of time. Chinese-made magnetic compass, rudder, and astrolabe. Portuguese navigator, Prince Henry invented the caravel for long-distance trading. Choose one of these major European powers and discuss their specific motivations and destinations.
Around 1600, the Dutch challenged Portuguese rule. As they sought to build trade empires, the Dutch and English weakened the Portuguese. The Dutch headquarters is in Java. They conquered Malacca and the Spice Islands from Portugal. They wanted to grow their economy.
