Type of Facility/ Architectu ral Design Inmate Population Impact Campus Design Inmates The campus-style prison is very much like a college campus with its multiple buildings, lack of fencing and guard towers and is normally used for minimum security inmates. This style of prison is normal utilized for minimum security (Krancer, B. A. 1980). This style uses the open space concept, detached dorms or cottage style housing with paths (Brisbane, A.S. 1985). The concept can have a physical impact on inmates since they are required to exit and enter buildings as well as walk a certain distance. If an inmate is unable to walk any distance this may cause stress. On the other going to and from buildings allows for exercise in fresh air. This style of prison may have a psychological impact on inmates. Not many prisons may have a good impact; but, this less restrictive style may have positive effects on mental health. The dorm or cottage style living arrangements provides a smaller number of inmates which may lead to less anxiety over safety. Since this level of offender requires less supervision there is a lower staff-to-inmate ratio which allows for an inmate/officer relationship of more frequent interactions. Krancer, B. A. (1980). This layout separates officers from incarcerated persons with bars or bulletproof glass where they monitor the inmates in their cells. (Waid, C. A., & Clements, C. B.). The radial design may have physical impacts on disabled inmates by not being able to communicate directly with prison staff that they need mental health or medical assistance (Sanders, J. 2020). If a prison is overcrowded and the floor plan, such as radial, has designated spaces where inmates interact the number of people in one area may have an adverse effect on those with mental health. This design may have a psychological impact on the disabled due to severe lack of privacy, isolation, and constant surveillance (Shearer, S.)
