Compare the narratives presented in your primary and secondary sources relevant to your historical event.
In my primary sources, “A Witness at Wounded Knee, 1973” and “Dennis of Wounded Knee” they both present firsthand accounts of the events at Wounded Knee occupation. “Dennis of Wounded Knee” explains the causes leading up to the events in 1973 and the reasoning for the occupation. While “A witness at Wounded Knee, 1973” gives an outsider’s perspective at the moment of the occupation. Both perspectives are relevant and needed in order to understand the history and the effect of the occupation. In my secondary sources, “Wounded Knee 1890 to Wounded Knee 1973: A Study in United States Colonialism” and “Contested Boundaries: Native Sovereignty and State Power at Wounded Knee, 1973”, both articles provide historical information of the Wounded Knee occupation. However, “Wounded Knee 1890 to Wounded Knee 1973: A Study in United States Colonialism” gives readers more background into previous history from the occupation so that we can better understand the tension between the Indigenous people and the US government. It helps to understand that this was not a protest out of hate but frustration from previous issues with the government. Describe one narrative that has significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of your historical event.
My primary resource, “A Witness at Wounded Knee, 1973” helps influence the contemporary understanding of the Wounded Knee occupation. It gives insight from someone who witnessed the event firsthand but was not directly involved. It allows us to see the injustice and create our own thoughts and opinions around AIM and the US government. Explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical research question. Please provide your revised research question and then explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical event.
The chosen narrative gives me a better understanding of what questions I could be asking. My previous research question, “Did the Civil Rights movement occurring around the US impact the civil concerns with the tribes as well?” was not as narrowed down and focused. Reading the firsthand account of Owen Luck gave me more information to ponder on in regard to my research question.
How did the Wounded Knee occupation improve the Native Americans fight against injustices caused by the US government?
