Imperialism to my understanding is when a country or countries begin taking over another country a piece at a time to expand their territory for personal gain. So in other words, when another country steals the land of another to grow their territory for economic or political gain. This contributed to the Scramble for Africa because during the time period from 1881 to 1914, several countries, after the abolition of slave trade began sectioning off pieces of Africa and overtaking them. The Central and Allied powers, by 1914, had overtaken pretty much all of Africa. This was all done to acquire raw materials and for political gain. Geographically speaking there were aspects of the land that both helped and hurt the Scramble for Africa. The Central Powers had German possessions in Togoland, Cameroon, East Africa, and Southwest Africa, which were widely dispersed making them difficult to defend according to Allosso, D., & Williford, T. (2021). The Suez Canal contributed to the Scramble for Africa because it provided direct access to the East African coastline from Asia, this made it possible for European armies to colonize East Africa, themaparchive (n.d). The “White Man’s Burden” talks about how it is the white man’s responsibility to overtake and civilize non-white people to become more like the United States and Europe according to Allosso, D., & Williford, T. (2021). This mission to “civilize” non-whites shows that imperialism teaches that whites are superior to every other race and need to be overtaken to teach them to be civilized. This is basically saying it is ok to conquer any race because the white race was more “civilized”. This was, in my opinion, a ploy to take more land for economic gain. There was no justice in the Scramble for Africa. This was purely a power move for economic and political gain. Anytime people are forced from their home so someone else can gain from it, there is no justice. These people were taken over a slaughtered when they tried to protect their land, in my eyes that is not justice. References Allosso, D., & Williford, T. (2021). Modern world history .
