Part A:
Professional Goal(s) & Objective(s)
Goal: Acquire knowledge to understand how children process their feelings and emotions, especially with topics such as death or grief
Objective: Child Life Specialists and their methods or procedures in helping children process grief and other big feelings in a hospital setting.
Relevance:
This professional goal is relevant my major and profession because I hope to become a Child Life Specialist when I graduate. This goal will help me better understand how grief impacts individuals, especially children, how they cope with it, and what they feel as the events happen. By gaining a better understanding of this, it can also help me better support and care for the children during this time.
Method to meet Goal & Objective: (Including Resources, Materials & People Needed):
Get in touch with a child life specialist and interview them via phone, email, or in person.
Read textbook for SOW3740: Social Work Practice with Loss and Life Transitions class and pinpoint information that discusses how children process grief and other emotions in a hospital setting.
Timeline:
Textbook is read every week for class, so as class continues, I will learn the information needed to complete my goal.
Get in touch with a Child Life Specialist by the first week of October and schedule an interview for mid-October to early November.
Plan for Collaboration:
Reaching out to a Child Life Specialist for the interview.
During my SOW3740 class, asking questions during the lecture, meeting with the professor to discuss sections of the book I may not understand or need further elaboration on, and having discussions with peers about the book. Instructor Initial indicating approval of submitted goal(s):
Part B:
Reflection & Summary (including revisions to original goal(s); What you will do differently as a result of what you have learned as a
result of completing this PDP):
From the interview I did with the Child Life Specialist and my SOW3740 class, I learned that in times of darkness, children will always find or be the light. Even with tough subjects like death and grief, children are very perseverant and can understand this subject. While also being able to regulate their emotions and see a light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve also learned that talking about death and grief with children will never be easy, and the approach is on a case-by-case basis. But as the professionals and educators, we mustn’t sugarcoat anything. Being honest and straightforward with children in terms and language that is appropriate for their stage of development is required. Some days will be harder than others, and some cases will be very emotionally taxing on us and our patients, but trying to preserve the joy and creating moments of joy for them in difficult times will be very helpful for them and how they choose to grieve.
