Scenario: You are a state patrol officer, on duty, who has observed a car unable to stay in its lane. When you pull the car over, you realize that the driver is also a state patrol officer who you know well and whose wife has a friendship with your wife. You have engaged in several social activities with him in the past. He is a very popular and likeable colleague in the department. As you engage with him after pulling him over, you notice that there is a strong scent of alcohol on his breath and that he is slurring his speech. When asked if he had something to drink, he says that he has just come from the retirement party of a popular police chief. He adds that he would be willing to park his car and have his wife pick him up if you could let this error slide, and states, “Law enforcement officers need to support each other.” As a patrol officer, you also have an obligation to enforce traffic laws and maintain public safety. Objective Summary: An officer who works for the state patrol department notices a vehicle that is unable to stay in its lane. The officer proceeds to pull the vehicle over and when the officer reaches the window to talk to the driver; he realizes that the driver is not only a popular well-liked fellow police officer but also a friend outside of the department. While talking to the off-duty officer; the on-duty officer could smell the strong scent of alcohol coming from the driver and noticing the slurring when he would talk. The driver tried to explain that he was driving home from the retirement party from a popular police chief and that he would be willing to park his car and have his wife come pick him up. As a state patrol officer who follows the traffic laws I decide to do a field sobriety test to the fellow police officer to prove that he was intoxicated and after he fails the sobriety test I would write him a ticket for driving him under the influence and then I would arrest him for breaking the law. I could not let him get away with the violation, avoiding the ticket, and also arresting him. References:
