Module 7 Short Responses – Question 1 Name three historical lenses that you could apply to gain a fuller picture of the relationship
between Natives and white settlers. Be sure to respond to this question in no more than one sentence, using proper grammar.
To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between Native Americans and white settlers, three historical lenses that could be applied are political, social, and cultural. The political lens involves examining how white settlers influenced any shifts in the political structures and systems of Native American tribes. The social lens focuses on investigating how the dynamic between Native tribes changed before and after the arrival of white settlers. Lastly, the cultural lens explores the transformations within Native American cultures due to the presence and impact of white settlers in America.
Module 7 Short Responses – Question 2 Revise the thesis statement at the top of this page to reflect a more complex view of the relationship between Natives and white settlers. Your revised thesis statement should be longer than one sentence.
"The conflicts between Natives and white settlers in the early 19th century were multifaceted and
cannot be simplified to a single cause, as they encompassed a complex interplay of factors, including disputes over land, cultural clashes, economic interests, diverging political systems, societal transformations, and the broader historical context of colonization."
Module 7 Short Responses – Question 3 Name three historical lenses that you could use to look at the events described in the video you just saw.
Three historical lenses can be applied to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the events surrounding the First Thanksgiving: scientific, cultural, and military. Through the scientific lens, one can research the impact of introducing new diseases by English settlers on Native tribes, examining its consequences on population, health, and social dynamics. The cultural lens focuses
on exploring how Squanto's exposure to English culture, having been enslaved, influenced his role as an intermediary between the Native tribes and the English, thereby shaping the dynamics and interactions during that historical period. Lastly, the military lens investigates the influence of inter-tribe warfare on the conflict with the English, shedding light on the complexities of power struggles and alliances shaping the early interactions between Natives and settlers.
Module 7 Short Responses – Question 4
Massasoit's decision to approach the Pilgrims about an alliance was contingent on what previous event or events? (Name one or two.)
Massasoit's decision to approach the Pilgrims about an alliance was contingent on their dire circumstances following a series of devastating epidemics that significantly reduced the Wampanoag population and left them vulnerable to external threats. Additionally, tensions and conflict with the Narragansett tribe further reinforced Massasoit's motivation to seek strategic alliances, making joining forces with the Pilgrims a viable option for security and protection.
Module 7 Short Responses – Question 5 Name one short-term consequence and one long-term consequence of the alliance between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims.
One short-term consequence of the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims alliance was increased stability
and security for both parties. The coalition allowed for mutual protection against external threats,
fostering relative peace and cooperation between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims.
One long-term consequence of the alliance was the gradual erosion of Wampanoag autonomy and land rights. Over time, as more English settlers arrived and expanded their settlements, conflicts arose over land ownership and use. The Wampanoag gradually lost control over their ancestral lands and faced increasing encroachment, leading to significant disruptions in their way
of life and the ultimate displacement of their communities.
Module 7 Short Responses – Question 6 How has your understanding of the historical event in your essay changed as a result of your research? Describe one instance of a misconception or a wrong idea you had about your topic that has been corrected after researching and writing about it.
My perception of the 1974 Desegregation of the Boston Public Schools has significantly evolved
through my research. Initially, I held the misconception that this event solely aimed to combat racism and achieve racial balance within the schools. However, my understanding has changed as I discovered that the lawsuits leading to Judge Garrity's ruling were driven by concerns about the quality of education rather than solely focusing on racial demographics. The litigation against
the school board was prompted by the belief that predominantly white schools provided better instruction compared to mostly black schools. While there was some truth to the disparities in educational quality, it became apparent that the entire Boston Public School system was substandard, and the Boston School Committee resorted to busing students in an attempt to maintain racial segregation. Regrettably, this narrow perspective prevented the committee and even white parents from realizing that their children were not receiving the best possible education. This misconception played a role in Judge Garrity's ruling. In retrospect, it becomes evident that Boston truly needed a comprehensive overhaul of the education provided across all schools rather than solely focusing on busing students to achieve racial parity.
