It is often said that the Spanish motivations for exploration of the New World included “God,
Gold, and Glory.” To varying extent this is true, but does not explain the overall motivation of
the Spanish to explore and conquer the New World. After reading your text and documents,
answer the following questions in a discussion post: Do you think the Spanish were most
motivated by the acquisition of land, the possibility of gaining wealth and resources, or the
possibility of converting Native Americans to Christianity? What events from Spain’s history or
culture support your interpretation of exploration? Did the conquistadors share the same
motivations as the Spanish rulers and elites? What evidence supports your conclusions? What
jumps out at you most from the Requerimiento?
