Survey of United States History – C121
Task 3
December 14th, 2022
A. The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, the Freedmen's Bureau, and African American
schooling were three key developments in racial relations that resulted from the Reconstruction.
Slavery was prohibited in the United States as of the 13th Amendment. All Americans born in the
country now have citizenship according to the 14th Amendment. The 15th Amendment made
voting in Ameri elections open to all citizens. The 14th Amendment, which was the first to
recognize African Americans as citizens of the United States, had the most influence. These three
Amendments brought about many significant social and economic changes (Norton, 2015).
Another significant development during the Reconstruction Period was the Freedmen's Bureau.
The Freedmen's Bureau offered a wealth of resources for freshly freed African Americans. It
assisted with food, shelter, clothes, medical care, and education. The Freedmen's Bureau
constructed hospitals and schools to provide medical and educational resources (Norton, 2015).
Finally, African Americans' education was established. Education was previously solely available
to white people. African Americans were finally allowed to enroll in schools equally with white
students in 1877. Public schools were established during Reconstruction, giving African
Americans equal access (Norton, 2015).
B. In the United States, industrialization led to numerous significant developments.
Inventions brought about a significant transformation. The scope of inventions was enormous,
and they significantly impacted society. The telephone was one of the inventions that had a
considerable influence. The telephone enabled individuals to communicate much more quickly
than they were accustomed to previously. Faster communication made it possible to spread more
information. People might be better informed about societal or political issues. Voting was
affected by this change because more information could be communicated about the candidates
(Norton, 2015).
Another significant change was Urbanization. The increase of people in urban areas causes a lot
of societal changes. This had an effect since people's income decreased as these locations became
more populous. People found it impossible to purchase transportation to work as a result.
Urbanization altered the way American culture lived (Norton, 2015).
C1. Social morals and religion heavily influenced the Progressive reforms. Ministers like Walter
Rauschenbusch and Washington Gladden were responsible for developing the Progressive
reform. They believed that if they aided the less fortunate, this reform would save them.
Additionally, this movement raised awareness of unethical business practices, poverty levels, and
industrialization's social repercussions (Norton, 2015).
C2. Race equality and women's suffrage were two reform initiatives that contributed to the
Progressive Era. The NAACP National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was
an act to encourage racial equality was formed in 1909. This law was created to protect the civil
rights of African Americans. People who think that everyone should have equal rights, regardless
of race, are the ones who developed this law. The Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act
were both impacted by this law, which also contributed to ending segregation. Public Schools
were one of the first to end segregation from the NAACP Act (Norton, 2015).
Women's Suffrage Act was yet another reform that impacted the Progressive Era. Women's
Suffrage Act was yet another reform that impacted the Progressive Era. Women were not given
rights at this time. For their rights, women had to struggle. They were not allowed to vote or
work. Women started uniting to fight for equality so they would not have to remain silent. This
law made it more evident to lawmakers how resourceful and helpful women were. The passage
of the 19th Amendment was a result of this action. This Amendment allowed women to vote
(Norton, 2015).
C3. Numerous effects of the progressive movement can be seen. Eliminating inequality and
segregation was one of the political effects of the Progressive Movement in America. The
intention was to stop discrimination based on race and gender. It was necessary to hold those in
positions of authority accountable for this abuse. The ability to vote was helpful in this situation.
Through voting, voters could stop this exploitation by opposing laws and ejecting officials from
office. (Norton, 2015).
D. The US's involvement in Cuba's fight for independence from Spain, which sparked the
Spanish-American War in 1898, is one of the earliest instances of how American Imperialism
played a role in the Spanish American War. The Spanish-American War was known as the
struggle between the United States and Spain in 1898 over Cuba's independence. There was a
close economic tie between the US and Cuba. By importing sugar to the United States, Cuba was
earning money. As a result, the United States conquered Cuba, replacing Spain, which had
