This Website According to Benjamin W. Labaree[2.] “Early on the evening of December 16,
1773, thousands of disgruntled colonists surged toward Boston's waterfront. A band of 50 or 60
men, crudely disguised as Native Americans, then climbed aboard anchored vessels. They
proceeded to break open 340 chests of tea with hatchets and dumped the contents into the waters
of Boston Harbor. This event, known ever after as the Boston Tea Party, precipitated
consequences that led almost inevitably to the outbreak of the Revolutionary War at Lexington
and Concord 16 months later.’ Benjamin W. Labaree

concern that a provincial tax on tea and coffee would “bring on the displeasure of those two great

three years later, as ships bearing tea made their way to Boston, the same town meeting fumed
that the “East India company” had launched “a violent attack upon the liberties of America.”
