Stonewall Rebellion
Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event.
The reality of society in the 1960’s and 1970’s was that of discrimination. The United States was a place of animosity throughout the civil rights movement and human rights were often polarizing. So many minority groups were fighting for basic rights and safety in their communities. Homosexual relations were looked down upon. Harassment of sexual minority groups was at a high. There were few places that people of the LGBT community could find solace. Even the police, whose job is to protect and serve the citizens, were an active hand in the
discrimination and harassment towards this group. The harassment that took place, in the early hours, at the Stonewall Inn was the tipping point for LGBT people and allies. The days and demonstrations that followed rung loud and clear, the start, of the end of tolerating such hate.
Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
Marsha P. Johnson is one of the most well-known key figures in the Stonewall Rebellion. She was
an African American drag queen who was one of the leaders of the Gay Liberation Movement and devoted her lifework to homeless LGBT youth, gay and transgender rights, and those who were affected by HIV and AIDS. Although she was not present when the police raid had started, she led many of the protests that followed during the rebellion. Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event.
Marsha P. Johnson had lived her whole life baring the struggle of oppression and hate. Being LGBT and an African American, she knew hate in all its forms. Her motivation came from anger and exhaustion from the fear that her and her community lived every day. Nothing is more motivating than the feeling of oppression and that you have nothing left to lose. Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event.
The 1960’s was known as the time of war and peace. There is not a better phrase for what Americans were experiencing overseas and on our own home front. The Vietnam War as well as the war on civil and human rights created a heavy tone throughout the hearts and minds of Americans. There was no escaping the feeling of fighting, even if that fight was against what others were for. After years of fighting, peace is all that was missing. Johnson well knew that peace could not be obtained without a fight.
Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of your topic.
Being able to know how an event can impact someone is important but also knowing how someone can impact an event changes the perspective of value. Knowing the background and influence of Marsha P. Johnson allows for a look into why Stonewall was so monumental in the fight for change. When dealing with human rights, a face must be put to it. How these events
and laws impact the people before, during, and after shows the value of the event itself. Without
knowing why something is worth fighting for we will never believe in the fight necessary for change.
