Chicana and Chicano Studies 50 An Introduction to Chicana/o History Midterm Exam Study Sheet 20pts Exam Date: 11-12pm October 13, 2023 (in-Class) You are responsible for the following terms discussed in class or in the required readings. An Id should include the who, what, when, where, why/how. It should be written in paragraph form. Study them, outline them, practice writing brief descriptions (No more than 2 paragraphs should be enough) for each one and remember to relate them to the course. I will choose 10 of the following ID’s and you will answer 4 of them. Each will be worth 3 pts. for a total of 12 pts. Identifications Al-Andaluz Reconquista Moctezuma Tenochtitlan Gran Chichimeca Hernan Cortes Malintzin Tenepalli Casta System Encomiendas Valladolid Debate Acoma Massacre 1599 Juan de Onate Guerra de Fuego y Sangre Moro/Moor Po’Poy Pueblo Revolt Genizaros Mission system Junipero Serra Sexual violence in California Virgen de Guadalupe Gente de Razon Constitution of 1824 Battle of the Alamo Manifest Destiny Mexican American War Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Josefa Segovia/Juanita Camp Grant Massacre Lynchings Texas Rangers Barb Wire Tiburcio Vasquez Corridos Gregorio Cortes Essay Themes Essays should be well organized and written with thesis statements and supporting body paragraphs. Essay outlines for these questions are recommended. I will choose three of the following essay questions and you will have to answer 1. The essay is worth 8pts. 1) Describe Michel Rolph Truillot’s four instances where power enters into the production of history. Do so by describing the production of one event or historical actor we have discussed in class (eg. Columbus, the acoma massacre, the junipero serra controversy, Josefa/Juanita). How has what was said to have happened shaped the telling and memorialization of the actor or event? What other ways of telling the story exist (if there are other ways) and how do these other narratives reshape the telling of the actors/events? Give examples from the readings and lectures throughout your response. 2) Discuss the Valladolid Debate between Bartolome de las Casas and Gines de Sepulveda. What were their major arguments? How did the debate and the laws passed during the 16 th century impact the indigenous population of New Spain? In what ways did the debate not change the way the indigenous population were treated? What group was left out of the debate? 3) Discuss the role of violence in the latter half of the 19 th century. What role does violence play in the closing of the Western frontier and the formation of the US Southwest? How does legal and extra-legal violence reinforce ideas of citizenship and race? Use the Camp Grant Massacre and the lynchings of Mexicans as examples to analyze in your answer.
4) In the writings by Antonia Castañeda and Nicole Guidotti Hernandez, sexual violence and gendered violence are centered around the questions of race, gender, colonialism and citizenship. Describe how these two forms of violence were used as methods of controlling the Native population of what is now California during the Spanish colonial period and the Mexicano population after the Mexico/US war in the Josefa/Juanita Case. What does this say about the use of sexual violence and gendered violence against Native women and Mexicanas during these two particular eras. Additionally, consider throughout your response how violence is foundational to Spanish colonial expansion in the 18 th century and the closing of the US Western frontier in the latter half of the 19 th century? 5) Describe and analyze at least (3) images from Diego Rivera’s mural of the Spanish Conquest. What are the relationships between the three images you have identified? Explain in detail by using examples from the readings and lectures throughout your response.
