Hello! My name is Dan, and I am currently pursuing my BS in Business with a concentration in Management Information Systems. I currently work in middle management IT for a pharmaceutical company and aim to continue to climb the ladder either there or in a similar environment. Originally from Northeast Pennsylvania my entire life, in June of this year I relocated my family to the coast of North Carolina. Studying history is valuable to everyone, not just historians, for several reasons. History offers a storehouse of information about how people and societies behave (Stearns, 1998). When we have this historical data to look back on, it can prevent us from making the same mistakes again by offering a look into the past to better anticipate society’s behavior. Additionally, history helps provide identity to everything. The history of our origins and family makes up a large portion of our identities, while even some businesses use their history for identity purposes. A recent event that we have all been experiencing would be the rise in the cost of living and inflation. Between work, school, and the kids, it was never something I really got myself too concerned with until one day the changes were just too big to ignore. Between the price hike in literally everything, the hike in interest rates, and the lack of pay increases to offset the inflation it was quite a wake-up call. If I had a stronger knowledge of our country’s historical recessions, I perhaps could have anticipated all of that and made some changes sooner. Source: Stearns, P. N. (1998). Why Study History? 1. Describe your understanding of your peer's current event by providing additional historical elements that may have contributed to the current event. Discuss the similarities and differences between your and your peers' perspectives Hello Gabby and thank you for sharing! I really like your example of the union strikes because they have a rich history that you could dive into to have a better understanding of current events. Strikes rose to fame during the rise of the organized labor movement that began in the mid-to-late 1800s and played a major role in the movement’s success with things such better wages, 8 hours workdays, and safer conditions (Kiger, 2022). Having this historical data and reviewing it assists in having a better understanding of the current strikes. Reference: Kiger, P. J. (2022, May 19). 10 Major Labor Strikes Throughout US History . History Channel. https://history.com/news/strikes-labor-movement Hello Sydney and thank you for sharing. I agree with your statement that these mass shootings are hard to learn from but agree that this is still much to learn from the history of these events. Sadly, what we learn will not be able to prevent these events from ever happening again, but it can decrease not only the number of events but also the casualties in the event a mass shooting occurs. While it is a sad reality, schools are now better preparing children on how to respond during these events and fine-tuning response protocols. Officials can look at these historical events to determine new legislation that may assist while professionals in psychology may look at them to determine a better course of action for early intervention. Historical data is essential.
