Level #2:
The Rise of Modern Sports
JOURNALING QUESTION:
The growth and global popularity of modern sports have been greatly influenced by the
advancements made in technology, transportation, communicative devicese and the modern
mass media. Throughout history, these factors transformed the way sports are played and how
they are viewed. They also expanded the reach and influence that sports have all around the
world.
Technology wise, the innovations that developed over time have led to better
equipment and training tools for athletes. Today, athletes now have access to state of the art
technology that greatly increases their performance and pushes the athletes potential
physically. It was the Americans native ability known as the “Yankee ingenuity” that
demonstrated a vast difference in mechanical innovation. (pg. 232)
With the growth of global sporting events, transportation innovation became a very
sought after thing. The faster and more efficient transportation methods have made it so much
easier for teams and fans to travel to these said global sporting events. Contributing the the
internalization of sports and the ability to host major tournaments. However, that is not all it
does. The growth in transportation also allows for scouts/recruiters to travel more easily and to
find hidden talents in different regions of the world. Evidently, in the 1800s after the civil war,
the development of a railroad network changed the game. “As early as 1838 Wade Hampton
was transporting races horses to Charlestion by rail, in 1839 the Nashville Railroad was carrying
New Orleans crowds to the Matirie Course…” (pg. 233)
Communicative devices such as live broadcasting, social media, and other
forums/communities played a role in modern mass media coverage. With these lines of
communication such as newspapers, magazines, radio, television, websites, etc. sports were
easier to cover to the public. This helped build a larger and more passionate fan base for teams.
Sports journalism also evolved. Allowing journalists to provide a more in-depth report,
commentary and analysis of games, trades, and other things that helped the public understand
the nooks and cranies of the games as well as the story behind every athlete.
Reflect upon the ways in which technology, transportation, communicative devices, and the
modern mass media has contributed to the growth and global popularity of modern sports.
