HIS 100 Module Three Activity Template: Historical Context
Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
Tulsa race massacre
Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event.
The Tulsa race massacre occurred during a point in time where African Americans still faced
discrimination and segregation heavily. An incident in the elevator occurred where a black man
was accused of harassing a white woman and even after the accusation was dismissed an angry
mob of white men destroyed the lives of numerous black people. The mob of people destroyed
homes, businesses, and schools stripping black people of anything they thought they did not
deserve.
Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
A key historical group in the Tulsa race massacre was the Ku Klux Klan. The KKK was a group
of white supremacists who violently targeted African Americans because they were not seen as
equal. I believe the group of white supremacists who murdered innocent people and demolished
the community of Greenwood District derived from the Ku Klux Klan.
Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event.
The Ku Klux Klan’s motivation in this historical event was to target black people and take away
anything they could from the Greenwood District community. The rising wealth of African
Americans angered the white people because they did not see them as deserving of what they
had.
Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event.
Learning about the destruction of the Greenwood District influenced me to choose this historical event
because it revolved around racial inequality which caused so many lives to be horrifically lost and
destroyed.
Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of
your topic.
Connecting my historical and current event improves the understanding of my topic because
even though it has been over 100 years since the Tulsa race massacre, people of color still face
racial inequality. Although society has progressed since then, we still have much more work to
do.
