Reading/Discussion Week 3 IST 370 What did you learn? There are several different concepts that I learned from this week reading. The main focus that I was able to observe from the reading, were based on the concepts of visualizations. In my opinion, I believe that visualizations are a method of storytelling, but with perspective, because people are allowed to have their own thoughts about an image. My initial thought about visualizations is that they are great, but no visualization can tell someone all of the details, which is why I enjoy the concept of ArcGIS Story mapping, because we are able to explain the images, with limited words while still using the images to create the story. As much as visualization helps a reader understand, it can only do so much without context. Thus, I learned that images are powerful, but story mapping is the most powerful tool that data analyst and GIS analyst have at their disposal. What additional questions do you have? Do you believe that images are enough to stand on their own and provide enough details to provide a message? Do you believe that ArcGIS Story mapping is the most powerful and unique tool that an analyst has at their disposal to educate the world? What additional things do you want to learn? After looking through the article and all of the images, I would like to learn how to develop more complex graphs and incorporate stories related to different identical events over the years. For example, the parallel coordinates graph I believe can be a great graph on fires over the years. Links to other relevant materials (websites, videos, etc.). Since I am new to python, I thought this might be a good exercise for other students who are also new to python, to gain a simple understanding of how to create visualizations using python.
