SNHU 107 Module Three Journal Template Complete all parts of this template by replacing the bracketed text with your responses. Submit for grading and feedback. 1. Identify at least two SNHU resources that will help you most in prioritizing your time, and explain how using these resources will support your success. (Add bullet points if needed.) Online Academic support center- After reviewing what is offered by this resource, it is clear to me that if I have a question regarding a course this should be my first stop to getting the answers I need. The “24/7 drop-in tutoring” (“Academic Support,” 2023) is something that immediately caught my eye. I was worried with online learning rather than in person, answers could be delayed as professors have an incredible number of students and we cannot just simply raise our hands. However, the online support center alleviated this stress, as I can hop on and chat with a tutor if the questions are more immediate. In addition to the tutoring available, I will also be sure to register for workshops related to my major due to the fact I have always learned through peer education at my boarding school; it could be beneficial for me in college as well. Luckily, SNHU makes these resources readily available all on the same site, so it will be easy to access when needed. Academic Advisor- Having gone through high school with a very involved advisor, I learned the benefits of speaking with him frequently. Although an academic advisor is there to help you find the right courses that fit your schedule and major, I realized they are helpful in so many more ways. Using my academic advisor as a resource I can communicate where I might be struggling in a certain course, and they can point me towards a path that might not seem so obvious as a first-year student. Certain times when something might seem overwhelming, the same issue could become more manageable from a short conversation with an experienced advisor. Professors- The third resource I intend to heavily focus on are my professors as well. Given the entire course is online, it’s very likely you cannot speak to your teacher after class anytime soon. With that being said, it does not make them any less valuable outside of the classroom. Throughout my educational career I never fully realized how much my understanding of a topic increased by having short frequent interactions with my teachers, whether that be a question in class or outside of it. However, here at SNHU I plan on making sure if I have a question I ask or even an idea about a topic I’m unsure of, I share. The discussion posts are also a great place to have conversations and ask these questions. 2. Identify at least two social supports (people, places, or things outside of SNHU) that will help you most in prioritizing your time, and explain how using these social supports will support your success. (Add bullet points if needed.) Family- My family has always been extremely supportive in any educational endeavor I have attempted. From taking non-credit classes at Berklee College of Music to now majoring in geoscience, they have always been excited to see me back at school. They provide the confidence but also motivation to push through the next four years for my degree. Without the strong support system they provide, I would never have been able to make the decision to even return to my studies. I am very close with my family and although I don’t see them every day, I speak to one of them almost every day. Whenever I hear the question “How’s school?” I always want to respond with a wholehearted answer followed by all that I have been learning. It feels great to not only learn but show those who work so hard for your success that their efforts are not going to be wasted.
My Workspace- Whenever I used to look around at the students working in the cafeteria with more distractions than if they were at a baseball game, I thought, “How?”. I was never the type of student who could have five different interruptions while still completing my paper to maximum proficiency. It is important for me to have a quiet, uninterrupted space to retain the information I’m studying. I have noticed that I spend thirty uninterrupted minutes much more efficiently than I do in an hour, interrupted once. Therefore, I made sure to find a space in my home that was not in my room but a place “new” to me. I use this as my workspace so I can train my mind that when sitting down in this room, I am already prepared to work, for there is no reason to be in that room if not. 3. There is a Learning Community available in this course. This community offers you the opportunity to: Meet virtually with classmates Join study groups and clubs Connect with tutors and writing coaches Practice the skills you need to succeed Identify two opportunities the Learning Community offers that will help you feel a sense of belonging here at SNHU, and explain how they could help support your success. Joining study groups and clubs- Whenever I begin to feel overwhelmed by a problem ahead of me, sometimes I tend to feel I am the only one in the world who is struggling. This can be detrimental to my education as it greatly reduces my levels of self-confidence and motivation. However, within a study group I can not only receive the help I need but see how others may also be struggling and realize I am not the only one. I have also always gravitated towards clubs. It provides an outlet within SNHU, but away from the classrooms, that allows similar minds to get together and enjoy learning about a topic in their own fashion. In some cases, clubs can transcend outside of SNHU as well, allowing students to work with other institutions and great minds. Connecting with tutors and writing coaches- Connecting with tutors throughout my career at SNHU will be crucial for my success. In the past, I would try and spend hours on end to solve a math problem, just to end up further behind than where I even started. I had a difficult time reaching out for help whether that be from a teacher or tutor. This not only took up time but left me with gaps in my knowledge about certain subjects. I plan to utilize tutoring whenever necessary here at SNHU. Because the online courses are self-motivated, leaving room for gaps in knowledge could quickly become canyons. 4. Explain how you will take ownership of your future academic success by prioritizing your time with SNHU resources, social supports, and Learning Community opportunities. I have always had difficulty reaching out for help in any scenario that life throws at me. I do not believe it falls to the fault of an ego, but rather a frustration that becomes an obsession. Having a difficult time pulling away from a task can lead to more time wasted than well spent. By reaching out to individuals and using the resources available, I can not only use my time more efficiently, but also create relationships along the way. I believe it is easiest to learn from someone if you are familiar with who they are. By staying in communication with professors, advisors, and other classmates I can better understand discussion posts and even simple tasks such as understanding the instructions written for an assignment. Building these relationships
