Case Study 3: Urban Mobility (Due by 9:00 AM on Oct. 24, 2023)
Two years ago, four people died while riding E-Scooters in Atlanta. As a result, drastic measures
were taking by government officials and E-Scooter companies in an attempt to improve safety for E-Scooter riders and surrounding pedestrians. For this case study, each student will take on the role of “Commissioner of Mobility Planning” within the City of Atlanta government. Your specific task will focus on safety policy creation for Electric Scooters in the metro Atlanta area. Task 1:
In your opinion, what is (are) the root cause(s) for the E-Scooter accidents? Do the actions taken by the City of Atlanta officials mitigate these root cause(s) that you identified? Task 2:
Review the actions implemented by the City of Atlanta. Identify one regulatory measure
that was implemented that you feel will be most effective and one measure you feel will be least effective. Provide a short description of why you made these selections. Task 3:
Assume that the City of Atlanta official actions were not taken. What are five measures you feel are most necessary to improve and promote safety around the use of E-Scooters. At least two of your five measures should not be repeated actions that have already been implemented by the City of Atlanta. Provide a description of each regulatory measures and a short summary of why you feel they would be effective. 1
