Andrea Almeda INST201-0501 Professor Drake Due Date: 10/12/23 Assignment 5 After observing my weekly routine, it has become clear to me that there are numerous devices that are linked to the internet, despite the fact that I do not use them for web browsing. In this assignment, I will analyze two devices and their functionalities, how they exchange information with the internet, and whether or not their purposes can be used without an internet connection. The first internet-connected device I use on a regular basis is my car. My vehicle contains an infotainment system that is connected to the internet for various purposes, such as real-time traffic information, a navigation system, and software updates. Essentially, it transforms my car into an information-rich environment. Without internet connectivity, it would not change my car’s role of being my main source of transportation. However, multiple features would be unavailable, such as real-time traffic updates and a navigation system, making it difficult to avoid congested routes and getting accurate directions. While these features are not necessary for the basic function of the vehicle, they do enhance the driving experience and make it more convenient for the driver. The second internet-connected device I use on a regular basis is my smart thermostat at home. The smart thermostat was designed to regulate the temperature within my household. The smart thermostat connects to the internet to collect weather information and track energy usage. It also adjusts the temperature settings based on weather conditions and my personal preferences. For example, during extreme temperatures in the summer, the smart thermostat may cool my home in advance before I return, optimizing both comfort and energy efficiency. In addition, it
Andrea Almeda INST201-0501 Professor Drake Due Date: 10/12/23 collects insights from my heating and cooling habits to organize a personalized schedule. Ultimately, it utilizes internet connectivity to access external data and enhance its functionality. Without internet connectivity, there would be limits to its features. It would have to depend on manual input or sensors, which would restrict its ability to adapt to weather conditions or collect usage data. Although it would still be able to regulate the temperature, without internet connectivity, it would reduce its capability to conserve energy and provide a more comfortable living environment. The internet-connected infotainment system in my car and the smart thermostat demonstrate the role of internet connectivity in our day-to-day lives. Both of these devices collect and exchange data with the internet to enhance their capabilities, offering benefits such as convenience, energy efficiency, and real-time information. Without internet connectivity, their primary functions would not be affected, but they would lose many of the features that would make these devices considered “smart”. This exemplifies how internet connectivity has become an essential part of our daily lives.
