Lina Waary 109255118 Psych 345 MW 11am 18 September 2023 In Dr. Stephen Chew’s 5 part video series titled How to Get The Most Out of Studying , the fourth part will focus on “Putting The Principles For Optimizing Learning Into Practice”. Strategies for achieving deep processing; question integration, creating a concept map, and practicing information retrieval. Question integration is a tactic in which the questions being presented, will in turn cause the student to think in a deeper processing level. For example some of the questions posed throughout the video series that encouraged deeper processing levels include, “What is metacognition?” “How does poor metacognition hurt academic success?” “What are the critical differences between shallow processing?”. A second studying tactic presented by Dr. Chew was the idea of a concept map. A diagram of nodes or links where the nodes are concepts or facts that are linked together. This study method will require multiple readings to complete and encourages the student to not look at the information as isolated facts. The last studying tactic presented was the importance of practicing retrieving information in ways the teacher expects and practicing recalling without referring to notes. In order to integrate the information I have learned throughout the video series into my study habits, I will need to focus on being conscious and present. Some of the tips provided that I find to be helpful is the importance of focusing on key summaries and definitions when notetaking in class. Secondly the importance of using highlighting strategically. It is necessary to be selective on highlighting, leave out unnecessary text in the highlighting, only focusing on key concepts, definitions, and the distinctions between them. If I, as a student, implement these skills in my habits, I will be able to be more effective in my study sessions. For instance, I really loved the idea of creating a concept map because it is a hands-on approach to studying. Not only will I be engaged in a task as I study, the task is to connect concepts throughout the chapters. And if I have taken good notes in class and only highlighted essential concepts throughout the readings, the task should not be so daunting.
