TOPIC DECLARATION MEMO TO: Marnie Cannon, Professor FROM: Danni Blair, Student SUBJECT: Application Packet Draft DATE: 29 September 2023 Summary The topic I chose for research is to better the organization of online documents for Southwest Engineers. I have experience in this area because I worked there for four summers and two Christmas breaks, and I worked mainly with the online filing system. I am very close to the Vice President and the General Manager of Southwest Engineers. They will definitely listen to what I have to say, and they will respond in a timely manner. This memo is about the different techniques that are going to be used for the Internal Research Project to help better the organization of online files for Southwest Engineers. Discussion The goal that I will be achieving is having a simpler and easier way of finding documents online. While I was working at Southwest Engineers, it was very difficult to find certain documents because they weren’t in the right place, or the name of the document wasn’t what it was supposed to be. This happens because each engineer sets up their own filing system for their client. I am proposing that I conduct research on finding better organizational skills to help this engineering firm. The primary research will be a survey given to the engineers/employees at Southwest Engineers. The survey will have questions about how they feel about the current organization, how they like to organize their own things, and how would they feel about getting a better filing system. One of the secondary types of research is found through the Texas A&M library. An academic journal emphasizes the importance of organizational skills in adults. 1 This journal is about techniques to help adult students have better organizational skills. I can use some of these skills, but the main thing I want to use from this journal is the importance of classification. Another secondary type of research is found through the Texas A&M library. A research article emphasizes multiple organizational techniques and uses a quasi-experimental method to find the best technique. 2 I can use this to find the best organizational technique to help Southwest Engineers. Next Steps After doing the primary research and seeing if the employees are wanting a better organizational system, I have an idea of making a general sheet that each engineer can use to help classify their documents. Each engineer will have the same general sheet as a guide to make the filing system easier to read and find documents. I can use my two secondary sources to help me design this sheet. I think this will be the most practical and effective organizational tool. However, I am totally willing to hear ideas from other people in my group and to consider them as well. 1 Issa, S. T.
