Autumn Miller June 27, 2021 Lesson 5 Assignment 5 COR204 Scenario 1: Mike Jones is pulled over after going 50mph in a 25mph zone. As the officer approaches the vehicle, he can see a crack pipe located on the front seat. The driver is ordered out of the vehicle and a search reveals a small bag of crack. Mr. Jones’s license is also suspended. In this scenario with Mike Jones, I believe that the best sanction that would work for him is to enroll him in substance abuse treatment programs. This condition requires people on supervision to participate in substance abuse treatment. “Treatment may involve detoxification and consist of individual, family, or group counseling in an outpatient or residential setting. It also includes various methods of testing for the use of drugs.” By placing Mike Jones in substance abuse treatment programs, it enables officers to monitor the use of illegal drugs, prescription drugs, or alcohol. It also provides officers with the ability and means to directly address the alcohol or drug abuse and control his behavior, which would stop him from driving illegally and using illegal drugs. The benefit of this sanction is that it may motivate him to abstain from alcohol and drugs, teach him to cope without relying on drugs, and reduce the risk that he will commit crimes in the future.
Scenario 2: James Miller is 18 years old and is arrested after being linked to several car burglaries. His parents report he is sneaking out of the house at night, not following rules, he is hanging out with the wrong people, and they suspect he may be using marijuana. With James Miller in this scenario, I would say that the best sanction that would suit him best is, first location monitoring. “Location monitoring is a court-ordered alternative to incarceration. Individuals may engage in limited, supervised activities in the community, with electronic technology to help verify compliance.” With this sanction, it would act as a punishment and a deterrent. It would allow the officers to make sure that James is where he is supposed to be always, and it would deter James from sneaking out committing burglaries and using marijuana because he knows that he is being monitored. This sanction is a benefit to both the offender and the community. James would still be able to lead a normal life, attending school, holding down a job, etc. this community supervision is also less costly than incarceration. Scenario 3: Michelle Smith is arrested at the Watering Hole Bar after engaging in a verbal altercation and slapping the bartender while she was intoxicated. After her arrest, she discloses to the pre-trial officer at court she recently lost her job. Losing her job has caused her to become depressed and drink. In the case of Michelle Smith, I would determine mental health and substance abuse treatment as appropriate sanctions for her. With this treatment she would be able to receive treatment services such as psychological/psychiatric evaluations; individual, family, or group counseling; and medication. While she is in these programs officers can monitor her and they will be ability and means to identify, assess, and provide care for Michelle. Also, the substance
