Par, Inc. believes introducing a new coating for golf balls would increase market share (Anderson et al., 2021). Par, Inc.'s research team tested 40 new and current golf balls using a mechanical hitting machine. Following the hypothesis test, the golf balls will have comparable driving distances to the current golf balls. The mean value for the current golf balls is 270.27, and the mean value for the new golf balls is 267.5; the current golf ball has a 2.77 greater driving distance than the new golf balls. The two values are not equal, indicating that the new golf balls provide a lower driving distance and are not comparable to the current golf balls, and the null hypothesis can be rejected. The p-value for the hypothesis testing is 0.094, greater than the significance level of 0.05. Consequently, the new ball does not have a greater driving distance, and they are not comparable, as proposed by Par, Inc. The descriptive statistics provided information on the mean for current and new golf balls and the minimum, maximum, and range. The current golf ball has a higher minimum distance of 255, and the new golf ball was at 250. Both golf balls had the same maximum distance of 289 yards, but the range on the new ball was significantly greater at 39 yards Based on descriptive statistics, the current golf ball has a 95% confidence level of 2.799, while the new golf ball has a confidence level of 3.165, resulting in a difference in driving distance of 2.77. A larger sample size would be helpful to obtain a more accurate representation of driving distance for each golf ball population. Although the new golf balls may be cut- resistant and longer-lasting, they do not necessarily offer a greater driving range than the current golf balls.
