Report
In the past few years, colleges and universities have focused on improving student achievement and persistence as crucial objectives for the sustainability of higher education. Six years later, less than half (48%) of the transferees had obtained a bachelor's degree (Nietzel, 2024). “Scalable and Practical Teaching Practices Faculty Can Deploy to Increase Retention: A Faculty Cookbook for Increasing Student Success” explores the profound impact of various teaching techniques on students' university experiences. These methods include active learning, student response systems, and encouraging verbal participation from students. According to the publication, the implementation of these strategies has resulted in improved student retention rates. For instance, the article reports a significant increase of over 30% in student retention in an introductory engineering course. These adaptable strategies can be implemented collectively or individually to keep students engaged in learning and guide them toward successful graduation. Given the universal nature of teaching, these approaches are relevant across all disciplines and educational levels (Hempel et al., 2020). After reviewing the article, it is apparent that the discussed approach has the potential to positively impact the achievements and persistence of undergraduate students in institutions of higher learning. While the role of advisers, staff, and administrators in student retention within colleges is traditionally emphasized, the article suggests that instructional faculty should also actively support students. Hempel, Kiehlbaugh, and Blowers suggest that prioritizing instructional techniques that cultivate effective learning environments results in notable academic results. A growth mindset is a self-perception or self-theory that holds that students can improve their most fundamental skills by working hard and being dedicated to their studies (Hempel et al., 2020).To further enhance the authors' strategy, it is recommended that the focus areas be expanded to bolster retention rates and ensure up-to-date teaching techniques. This broader approach seeks to enhance student retention rates while modernizing teaching methodologies. Reference Hempel, B., Kiehlbaugh, K. M., & Blowers, P. (2020).
